Mount St. Mary's Hospital sponsors stroke support group meeting

To help area stroke patients live their highest quality of life, Mount St. Mary's Hospital is hosting a stroke support group. The next meeting for the group is 1-3 p.m. Wednesday, March 7, in Room 249 of the main hospital at 5300 Military Road, Lewiston.

The annual reverse draw of Mount St. Mary's Hospital was held Feb. 28 at the Como Restaurant. Nearly 280 people attended the gathering, brought together by the Mount St. Mary's Hospital Foundation, St. Francis Guild Auxiliary and the board of associates.

AAA: Costly spring gas price spike coming to a pump near you

Motorists are paying about a quarter more per gallon of gasoline than they did one year ago. While pump prices have dipped in recent weeks, this is not a trend that is expected to continue. AAA forecasts the national gas price average will be as much as $2.70 per gallon this spring - a pump price Americans have not paid since summer of 2015, when prices hit $2.81.

Hospice Gran Fondo pre-ride spin at ChrisFit raises $500

It was a great work out for a great cause. Spinning instructor Stefany Critelli held a three-hour spin class at ChrisFit in Lewiston on Feb. 24. Riders paid $10 for each hour they participated. Many rode for the entire three hours and gave extra donations, as well. The event, which raised $500, was a pre-ride to support the Hospice Gran Fondo bicycle ride that raises money for Niagara Hospice.
Morinello targets stronger legislation to benefit military veterans

On Wednesday, Republican Assemblyman Angelo J. Morinello stood during session to speak on a bill that would provide sick leave to state employees who have served the U.S. military in combat theater or combat zones. The legislation designates these sick days are to be used specifically for any and all periods of absence during which an individual utilizes health care-related services directly related to his or her military duties.

Poloncarz, Burstein review 2017 Erie County opioid fatalities

Erie County Executive Mark C. Poloncarz on Tuesday joined county Health Commissioner Dr. Gale Burstein to review the latest county data on the opioid epidemic and fatalities associated with it, noting the Erie County Medical Examiner's office has confirmed 233 opioid overdose fatalities for 2017, with another 35 cases suspected but still pending confirmation. In 2016, 301 individuals died of an opioid overdose in Erie County.
