Rocking, pin-dropping to benefit Lew-Port students

A fundraiser to benefit the Lewiston-Porter High School Summer of '69 Music Scholarship will take place at 6 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 17, at the Lewiston Event Center, 845 Cayuga St. The event will feature a performance by the Summer of '69 All-Star Band with special performances by Lewiston-Porter High School students.
Lewiston-Porter alums bring new art, new ideas to new atrium

"With the renovation, the capital improvement project that happened with the school, the art rooms, the whole fine arts wing got significant renovations, and this beautiful atrium was added on," said art teacher Brett Coppins, Class of 1992. "Once that happened, it got us to thinking about how can we bring it to the next level. We really wanted to rename this section of the school the 'Center for the Arts.' "
Caitlin Fager joins Niagara River Region Chamber of Commerce

Niagara River Region Chamber of Commerce President Jennifer Pauly has announced a new addition to her staff. Caitlin Fager started on Monday as the event and membership manager. She replaces Christina Crane, who took another position in late 2017.
NYS Assembly minority conference announces release of 'A Safe Haven: Helping Abuse Victims and Enhancing Protections' report

Last fall, members of the New York State Assembly minority conference hosted a series of regional forums, including an event in Niagara Falls, to provide an outlet for victims of domestic abuse, their advocates and law enforcement to discuss ways to prevent in-home violence and effectively support those who have suffered from its traumatic impact. As a result of the forums, the task force on preventing domestic violence released its report, "A Safe Haven: Helping Abuse Victims and Enhancing Protections."

The Niagara River Region Chamber of Commerce will honor nine recipients from the northern Niagara area at its annual gala and awards dinner, Thursday, April 19, at the Niagara Falls Country Club in Lewiston. There, the chamber board of directors will present its 2018 Business and Citizen of the Year awards for the Lewiston, Youngstown, Ransomville and Sanborn communities.
Lake Ontario maximum outflows continue, as water levels remain high

The International Joint Commission announced this week that while several months of maximizing outflows has dropped Lake Ontario at an unprecedented rate and to well below the record peak set at the end of May 2017, water levels remain relatively high for this time of year following a cold and wet start to winter. As a result, IJC said that outflows will continue to be maximized in response while making intermittent and temporary reductions to manage challenging ice conditions in several areas of the St. Lawrence River.

Collins requests funding for Great Lakes Coastal Resiliency Study in FY19 budget

Congressman Chris Collins, R-NY-27, and 17 colleagues sent a letter to Office of Management and Budget Director Mick Mulvaney and Assistant Secretary of the U.S. Army (Civil Works) R.D. James requesting sufficient funding for the Great Lakes Coastal Resiliency Study (GLCRS) in the fiscal year 2019 budget. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers proposed this study to coordinate a strategy across the Great Lakes states to efficiently and effectively manage and protect the Great Lakes coastline.

Jacobs urges governor not to delay tax credits in budget

In a letter to Gov. Andrew Cuomo this week, New York State Sen. Chris Jacobs urged the governor to reconsider a budget proposal that would delay the payment of brownfield and historic tax credits until 2021. In Cuomo's current executive budget proposal, all but three of the state's business tax credits would be deferred for the next three years. Some refundable credits would be deferred as long as five years.
