The Space Between (theSpaceBetween.center), a training and problem-solving workspace, opened Thursday in a historic three-building complex on the Erie Canal in Lockport. Designed to help companies improve their processes and teamwork, The Space Between offers a wide range of guided services, as well as the ability to rent space for offsite meetings or training sessions.

New York State Sen. Chris Jacobs on Wednesday announced he secured an allocation of $50,000 in state education dollars for the Northwest Buffalo Community Center (NWBCC). The monies will be used to support the renovation of the education center that provides educational assistance programs for children in grades 1-12.

Raise your beer stein high and give "Prost" to the eighth annual Old Falls Street Oktoberfest, taking place from 1-8 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 30, on Old Falls Street's middle block in downtown Niagara Falls. The German-themed event will be held rain or shine and is free and open to the public. As per tradition, the day will kick-off with the ceremonial tapping of the kegs at 1 p.m.

On Tuesday, Create A Healthier Niagara Falls Collaborative introduced a new leadership model powered by four resident "change agents"/co-chairs. Sarah Obot, Brian Archie, Keyona Dunn and Evelyn Harris, all Niagara Falls advocates, will lead change from within. This grassroots, resident-lead effort, is an approach the collaborative members said they hope will foster tangible improvements across the community.

The Office of Mental Health announced New York is the only state in nation to have received a grant award from the federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) Zero Suicide grant program. The award of $3.5 million over five years will help implement and strengthen the state's suicide prevention efforts.

Rob Ortt joined other elected officials and the Mason's Mission Foundation in Pendleton to cut the ribbon on a unique playground designed specifically for children who are differently abled. Ortt has secured a total of $263,040 in state grants in support of Mason's Mission Playground at 6570 Campbell Blvd.

Old Fort Niagara in Youngstown is seeking individuals who would be interested in helping out with uniform production and repair on a volunteer basis. OFN would like these volunteers to commit, at minimum, to one day per month. These individuals would take direction from Suzannah Emerson, and need the following skills.

On Thursday, Sept. 21, the Western New York Land Conservancy will host a special history walk at the Stella Niagara Preserve in Lewiston. The hike will take place at 5:30 p.m. and will be led by Karen Noonan, a member of the Town of Porter Historical Society and the Youngstown Heritage Tours and Tourism Committee. Noonan is also the co-author of "From the Mouth of the Lower Niagara River: Stories of Four Historic Communities."

The 34th annual Lewiston Harvest Festival and Craft Show will take place from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 23-24. This year, there's a big change to the festival: Center Street will be closed from Fourth to Seventh streets. Vendors will be set up in the street to ease congestion for attendees and allow more room throughout the festival, leaving areas in front of retail storefronts open for customers.
