The Brickyard Pub & B.B.Q. is hosting Opportunities Unlimited of Niagara's annual "Celebrity Bartending" event - this year dubbed "Battle of the Businesses" - from 5:30-9 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 17. The event will benefit the more than 600 individuals with intellectual and other developmental disabilities whom the agency supports.

The 10th annual Walk Off Hunger, presented by Life Storage, raised a record-breaking $93,000 for the Food Bank of WNY. The proceeds from the event will help the Food Bank of WNY provide approximately 558,000 nutritious meals for hungry local families.

Congressman Brian Higgins joined local Vietnam War veteran Mykola "Nick" Shwec and the family of late Korean War veteran Michael "Mike" Licata on Monday at the Purple Heart Memorial, along the Walk of Heroes, at the Buffalo and Erie County Naval & Military Park. On National Purple Heart Day, Higgins was there to honor the service and sacrifice of both Purple Heart recipients, and all veterans.

The 18th annual Jack Beatty Memorial Cruise and Clambake, held July 14, continued its tradition of lively entertainment, food and leisurely sailing, all to benefit Niagara Hospice patients. Erie Canal Harbor Development Corp. and Assemblyman Sean Ryan announced Monday that ECHDC has entered into an agreement with Griffis Sculpture Park to erect a major sculpture on Buffalo's Outer Harbor. "Flat Man," a 30-foot steel sculpture, will be located on the Greenway Nature Trail near the water's edge.

Lake Ontario levels have been dropping rapidly compared to average rates through the months of June and July. The International Lake Ontario-St. Lawrence River Board has been releasing the unprecedented outflow of 10,400 m3/s (367,300 cfs) since June 14 and, despite wet conditions, Lake Ontario levels have fallen 30 cm (12 in.) since peaking in late May.

Four sites operated by Empower, formerly Niagara Cerebral Palsy, are equipped with semiautomated external defibrillators thanks to an underwriting grant from Univera Healthcare. With the devices, known as AEDs, these group homes for individuals with developmental disabilities are better equipped to respond to a sudden cardiac arrest.
