Grand Island Fire Co. President Mike Dallessandro welcomed local government officials, family members and special guests to fire headquarters on Saturday, May 20, to commemorate 79 years of first-rate community protection by the Grand Island Fire Co. He stressed that such dedicated volunteerism is much more than a passing fancy, but rather a lifetime commitment that cannot prevail without unconditional family support.

Councilwoman Beverly Kinney said from the very beginning she wanted the Grand Island Town Board to conduct a feasibility study on a proposal to build a new community center on the Island. She may get her wish at the next meeting of the Town Board.

John Jacoby has announced he is a candidate for the Lewiston Town Board. He has the endorsement of the Town of Lewiston Democratic Committee, and will be running for one of two seats on the board to be decided in the November general election.

In an effort to promote responsible drinking on Memorial Day weekend, Designated Drivers of Buffalo will be adding extra drivers, extra hours of availability, offering member rates to anyone requesting a ride, and half off for all active military members as well as veterans (with valid military ID) through Memorial Day.

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation is asking anglers to avoid spawning lake sturgeon in New York's Great Lakes waters, Great Lakes connecting channels, and tributaries of the Great Lakes, St. Lawrence River, Finger Lakes, and Oneida Lake. Typically during this time of year, DEC receives multiple reports of lake sturgeon (Acipenser fulvescens) caught by anglers fishing for walleye and other species.

New York Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman on Tuesday announced 47 states and the District of Columbia have reached a $18.5 million settlement with the Target Corp. to resolve the states' investigation into the retail company's 2013 data breach, which affected more than 41 million customer payment card accounts and exposed contact information for more than 60 million customers.
