Higgins: 50 percent cut to Community Development Block Grant program would be devastating to WNY

Congressman Brian Higgins is sounding the alarm on a proposal that would slash funding for the Community Development Block Grant program in half. Under the Transportation, Housing and Urban Development appropriations bill introduced in the House of Representatives, the program would drop from more than $3 billion to just $1.6 billion nationwide.

Gov. Cuomo details flood recovery program

Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo visited Lockport Tuesday to discuss the New York state flood recovery program and urge eligible residents and businesses in Niagara County to apply for state aid.

The $16 million flood recovery program is intended to provide immediate recovery assistance to victims of recent floods and to address gaps in coverage for impacted homeowners, business owners and farmers in Herkimer, Madison, Montgomery, Niagara and Oneida counties.

Let there be light: Power returns to Niagara County

Electricity gradually returned Saturday afternoon and evening to the homes of National Grid customers in Niagara County that were dark following Friday's storm.

As of 9:30 p.m., less than 1,000 homes were waiting to receive electricity. Just 12 hours earlier, more than 5,000 homes in Lewiston alone were without power. National Grid reported that, at the storm's peak, about 75,000 customers in upstate New York were left in the dark. About 28,500 customers were in the Western New York region - primarily in Erie and Niagara counties.
