Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo signed into law Tuesday the NY SAFE Act (Secure Ammunition and Firearms Enforcement Act), which will give New York state the toughest gun laws in the nation. The legislation includes provisions to keep guns out of the hands of convicted felons and potentially dangerous mental health patients, and ban high capacity magazines and assault weapons.

Under the legislation, New York will be the first state in the nation to ban any magazine that can hold more than seven rounds and run instant background checks on all ammunition purchases at the time of sale.

The Buffalo Sabres have announced that approximately 18,000 tickets remain for the 2012-13 regular season. Four games have sold out and only limited seating is available for the remaining games. The 18,000 tickets that remain will go on sale to the general public Tuesday, Jan. 15, at 10 a.m.

The Buffalo Sabres have announced that 31,213 tickets for the 2012-13 season were sold on Sunday during a 24-hour presale period for current season-ticket holders and current mini-pack holders. The mark set a record for single-day ticket sales for the club - excluding the 2008 Winter Classic - with the general on-sale for individual game tickets to begin on Tuesday, Jan. 15.

DEC extends comment period on CWM's draft permit renewal application

New York's Department of Environmental Conservation announced this week it has extended the public comment period for a draft permit renewal application on file from CWM Chemical Services LLC to 60 days, and will now close comments on March 29.

CWM, a Waste Management company, currently owns and operates a commercial facility for the treatment, storage and disposal of hazardous and industrial non-hazardous wastes on an approximately 710-acre site on Balmer Road in the Town of Porter.

New York Air National Guard Col. John Higgins, a master navigator with more than 3,500 hours flying in the F-4 Phantom fighter, the F-111 bomber and the C-130 Hercules, will replace Col. Jim McCready as commander of the 107th Airlift Wing at the Niagara Falls Air Reserve Station on Saturday, Jan. 12.
