The Western New York Regional Economic Development Council met to endorse 24 projects as priority projects for the second round of Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo's Regional Council initiative. The council also provided an update to the public on the progress of the "Buffalo Billion" initiative. Cuomo has tasked the WNYREDC with recommending an investment strategy that will leverage the state's $1 billion pledge and gain a 5:1 commitment from the private sector, resulting in more than $6 billion in total economic development impact.

Opportunities Unlimited of Niagara is the proud recipient of a $2,000 Guillemont Memorial Grant from the Niagara Falls Episcopal Urban Ministry. Kathy Hochul was joined Thursday by Maureen Smith, deputy assistant secretary of the U.S. Department of Commerce, and by representatives of World Trade Center Buffalo Niagara, the New York State Center of Excellence in Bioinformatics & Life Sciences, and the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus in announcing a $218,771 grant from the U.S. Department of Commerce was awarded to WTCBN as part of a $682,000 cooperative award.

State Sen. George Maziarz announced Thursday he was able to secure funding for the five school districts in Orleans County from the Legislative Education Aid Grant Process. Each of the five districts - Albion, Holley, Kendall, Lyndonville and Medina - will receive $50,000 to spend in their district on what their top priorities are. Maziarz was joined by the school district superintendents to announce the awarding of the funding as the new school year starts.

As part of the YMCA's commitment to the community, the Y has teamed up with the Food Bank of WNY and WGRZ-TV Channel 2 to help give back to those in need right here in Western New York. Beginning Nov. 1, all YMCA Buffalo Niagara Branches and YMCA Buffalo Niagara's corporate office will begin taking donations of non-perishable items for the Food Bank of WNY.
