Can You Help: Benefit slated for Niagara Falls special ed teacher

A benefit will be held Wednesday, Aug. 22, for Jennie Cyran, a young woman who was diagnosed with osteosarcoma in January 2011. A 2007 graduate of Niagara University, she currently teaches special education in the Niagara Falls City School District and has coached children in several sports.

House defense bill takes step toward protecting Niagara Falls Air Base

On Friday, Rep. Kathy Hochul, NY-26, voted for the Defense Appropriations bill for fiscal year 2013, which was adopted by the House. Included in the bill are provisions that would prohibit the U.S. Air Force from retiring any aircraft in 2013 and increasing funding for the Air National Guard personnel accounts, thereby preventing cuts and protecting installations such as the 107th Airlift Wing at the Niagara Falls Air Reserve Station.

Grand Island Fire Co.: 3 escape injury in head-on crash

At 3:38 p.m. on Wednesday, July 18, Grand Island Fire Co. rescue personnel responded to a two-car motor vehicle accident on Baseline Road near the intersection of Bedell Road.

Fire Chief Kevin Koch states that although this head-on collision caused considerable front end damage to a pickup truck and passenger van, the occupants claimed no injuries, during evaluation by GIFC medics. Islander Mary Westlake-Douds, age 36, and her 1-year-old son, who was safely secured in a child car seat, both escaped injury. The other driver, 34-year-old Jacob Kolb of Buffalo, also claimed no injuries.
