Niagara University, in partnership with the City of Niagara Falls and the P2 Collaborative of Western New York, has been awarded an 18-month, $300,000 grant from The John R. Oishei Foundation for the implementation of "Creating a Healthier Niagara Falls: A Neighborhood Empowerment Approach."

Assemblyman John Ceretto, R-I-Lewiston, blasted the Assembly Majority on Monday for denying an up or down vote by the entire Assembly on legislation that would return state lands currently receiving property tax exemptions back to Niagara County's tax rolls. The bill, which was delivered a setback in the Rules Committee, which is controlled by New York City Assembly members, was rejected along party lines.

The Sports Medicine Department of Mount St. Mary's Hospital will offer a series of basic conditioning programs for high school age students starting July 6. Led by certified athletic trainers Jason Hopkins, ATC, and Brian Healy, ATC, the program will focus on endurance, speed, agility and injury prevention to assist athletes in grades 9-12 prepare for the fall 2011 season. The programs will be held on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

With only about a week of scheduled session left for 2011, Assemblyman John Ceretto, R-I-Lewiston, is urging the Assembly to pass the Senate version of Laura Cummings' Law. The legislation would help prevent child and adult abuse by expanding the authority of county protective service workers to enable full investigations into allegations of abuse. Under the Senate's version, the bill makes preventing access to a home were abuse is suspected a crime.

Niagara County lawmakers unanimously opposed a bill passed by the New York State Assembly that would require gun-buyers in New York state to purchase guns that include costly technology that had been repeatedly proven unreliable at best.

While the communities of Lewiston, and Niagara-on-the-Lake and Queenston, Ontario, come to mind when the War of 1812 is mentioned, it was from the Village of Youngstown, located in the Town of Porter, that the first families fled the night of Dec. 18, 1813, when the British and their Native American allies attacked and captured Fort Niagara.

Assemblyman John Ceretto, R-I-Lewiston, is sponsoring legislation to allow Nik Wallenda to traverse the Niagara Falls River Gorge on a high wire. Ceretto said the event will promote tourism and increase local revenue for the region.

George Maziarz, R-C-Newfane, have arranged a meeting with New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation Commissioner Rose Harvey to discuss the condition of Niagara Falls State Park and what steps can be made to address this issue before the height of the summer tourism season. The meeting will take place on Wednesday, June 15.
