Sales of native beadwork have been a tradition at the Niagara Falls State Park for more than 100 years. In honor of that history, applications for the annual lottery for Native American handicraft sales permits are now available at the Niagara Falls State Park administrative office in Prospect Park.

In the end, the Whirlpool Jet Boat Tours controversy boiled down to one thing and one thing only: a roughly 2,580-square-foot expansion. Despite the objections Monday night of a handful of people who claimed the tourism business is a bad neighbor, the Village of Lewiston Board of Trustees said the only issue members were interested in was the $1 million, two-story addition proposal that sat before them. Finding nothing wrong with the plan, the board approved it by a 4-0 measure.

Assemblyman John Ceretto, R, I, 138th District, Lewiston, this week joined several Assembly and Senate colleagues in announcing new legislation that will make it a crime for any elected official to knowingly destroy "open" constituent case files. The legislation, which carries penalties of up to one year in jail and a $25,000 fine, intends to prevent outgoing legislators from destroying existing constituent case files of new members.

Edward and Diane Finkbeiner will continue to own and operate the Barton Hill Hotel & Spa in Lewiston under the terms of an agreement reached Thursday in a special term of the New York State Supreme Court. Justice Richard C. Kloch Sr. denied a request by CIT Lending Services Corporation/Iddleson Group to place the four-story Center Street hotel in receivership provided the Finkbeiners pay $30,000 in past-due mortgage payments on the 13th of each month.

At its Jan. 6 reorganization meeting, the Lewiston Town Board opted for a new direction in the assessor's office. The change comes following last month's resignation letter by Acting Assessor Gene J. Virtuoso, who since 2005 has been serving in that role on a part-time basis. "I am submitting my resignation as part-time Acting Assessor effective Jan. 5, 2011 due to personal reasons," wrote Virtuoso on Dec. 10, 2010, to Supervisor Steve Reiter and Town Board members.
