State Assemblyman John D. Ceretto, I, R, 138th District, Lewiston, announced he has been appointed as the ranking Republican member of the Assembly Committee on Cities by Assembly Republican Leader Brian M. Kolb R, I, C-Canandaigua. Ceretto will also serve on the Election Law, Environmental Conservation, Housing and Tourism, Parks, Arts and Sports Development committees.

Classes will begin in February for the Niagara-Wheatfield Central School District's Continuing/Community Adult Education Program. The program has grown since its inception last year, with 90 course offerings this session, compared to 47 during the fall.

The Niagara Tourism and Convention Corporation launched an updated and newly designed website, www.Niagara-USA.com, Jan. 6 after a huge surge in online web traffic in 2010 and 2009. The website layout, navigation, colors and interactivity have all been overhauled to keep up with the growing demand for information on the Niagara USA destination.

The Village of Lewiston Planning Board will have two Whirlpool Jet Boat Tours expansion designs to consider when it meets Monday at 6:30 p.m. in the Red Brick Municipal Building. WJBT President John Kinney, upon consultation with Silvestri Architects, commissioned a second plan that shows 10 feet shaved off the north side of his proposed development.

At Monday's Village of Lewiston Board work session, Police Commissioner Al Soluri said he and Mayor Terry Collesano recently met with representatives from the New York State Parks Police, Lewiston Police Department and Artpark & Co. administration. Soluri indicated all parties have a vested interest in more efficiently moving traffic out of Artpark following the "Tuesday in the Park" summer concert series.

The highly successful musical theater apprenticeship program instituted last summer will be extended for Artpark's August production of "Fame - The Musical" this summer. The apprenticeship program provides an opportunity for up to eight high school music theater students of exceptional talent to participate in the company's Broadway musical production. Artpark will present the high energy musical that appropriately focuses on the hopes and aspirations of a group of students attending New York City's High School of Performing Arts, in the Mainstage Theater Aug. 12-18 for eight performances.

According to the National Fire Protection Association Division of Fire Analysis and Research, 40 percent of all home structure fires and 36 percent of occupant injuries are caused by cooking equipment. In addition, 59 percent of those injured tried to put out the fire themselves. Grand Island Fire Co. Chief Kevin Koch and his Grand Island firefighters are well aware of these life-threatening complications when handling these particular fire situations.

For this year's Christmas project, the students of St. Peter's Lutheran School, Sanborn, decided they wanted to help those in the local area. Each class collected personal care items, such as soap, shampoo and washcloths, which were sorted and put into men's and women's cloth carrying bags made by staff members. They were taken to local shelters to help those in need.
