Three years of exhaustive research, collaboration and consultation culminated Wednesday with the announcement by the Diocese of Buffalo of the implementation of "Faith in Tomorrow," the strategic vision for Catholic elementary schools.
The Very Rev. Richard J. Malone, bishop of Buffalo, said the diocese and The BISON Fund are collaborating on a plan to fund new scholarships for students who have applied to transfer out of low-performing Buffalo elementary schools.
"We are involved in preliminary discussions with the BISON Children's Scholarship Fund regarding a scholarship program, which could potentially increase Catholic school enrollment and positively affect the future of our elementary schools," Malone said.

The Academy is now accepting applications for its 2014 Student Academy Awards competition. Past Student Academy Award winners have gone on to receive 46 Oscar nominations and have won or shared eight awards. Winners include Pete Docter, John Lasseter, Spike Lee, Trey Parker and Robert Zemeckis.

"Johnnie's Adventures: Lewiston's Underground Railroad," a new book, is aimed at teaching children and adults the story of slavery and its connections to Lewiston. Each page of text includes historical annotations. Children can follow the adventure on the map on the back cover designed by BeauDesigns.

In 2011, the Firemen's Association of the State of New York unveiled a historic educational initiative called the "Higher Education Learning Plan," or "HELP." This statewide community college tuition reimbursement program is geared toward recruiting and retaining volunteer firefighters throughout New York. Today, FASNY announced the deadline for firefighters to apply for the spring 2014 semester is Feb. 1.

At one time, Olivia Gonyea was a typical student at Niagara-Wheatfield's Errick Road Elementary School. Then the unthinkable happened. When she was 8 years old, she was diagnosed with a form of cancer called Ewings sarcoma.

On Dec. 4, Starpoint Central School students, in collaboration with a handful of students from Sacred Heart Academy, visited the Sterling House Niagara, a senior living community in Wheatfield. The students brought with them 47 handmade fleece blankets, which they made for the residents over the past two months.

St. Peter R.C. School students in Lewiston decided to give back to families in need during the holiday season. Instead of exchanging gifts among themselves, the students decided to purchase new clothing and toys and household items for families in the area.
