The cool fall weather is once again here and should signal our suburban and country residents that they will soon hear the sound of target practice gunfire, usually on weekend or weekday evenings. This is especially true here in Wheatfield, as we have a large contingent of sportsmen and active gun owners. I'm one of them.

Despite Mother Nature's best efforts, the racing program was completed last Friday night at the Big R. A total of 90 cars signed in pit side for championship night, which featured a 50-lap Modified main, 30-lap Sportsman feature, 25-lap Streetstock event and the Firehall Enduro Series. The event was presented by Atwal Eye Care.

One of the nation's largest in-water displays of vintage boats will be held this weekend at the Buffalo Launch Club. The Antique Boat Show, hosted by the Niagara Frontier chapter of the Antique and Classic Boat Society, will celebrate its 33rd year on Friday, Sept. 10, and Saturday, Sept 11.

The Niagara River Region Chamber of Commerce held its first Niagara River Region Golf Outing on July 26 at the Niagara Frontier Country Club. Registered golfers enjoyed a beautiful day on the 18th hole private course, followed by cocktails, dinner and awards.

Ransomville Speedway management fought Mother Nature and won last Friday night. Despite heavy early-morning rain, the staff at the Big R forged on and at 7:15 p.m. threw the first green flag for the 106 competitors who filled the pit area on Mighty Taco and Modern Corporation night. The early-day moisture provided for plenty of side-by-side racing action.

Members of the Niagara Power baseball team of Niagara Falls and the Town of Niagara Recreation Department recently held a pitching camp at the Town of Niagara Community Center. Members of the boys' majors and travel teams were able to participate at the event.

Early morning showers gave way to afternoon sunshine and hot temperatures last Friday at the Big R. A total of 98 cars filled the pit area for the night's races sponsored by Jetport Lounge, Niagara's Lazy Lakes Camping Resort and the Talking Phone Book. Kid's rides for the first 200 youngsters started the night off followed by hot racing action.

The inaugural Battle at the Border is officially in the books, as Ransomville Speedway completed the schedule highlight last Friday night. A total of 30 358 Modifieds gathered in Western New York looking for the $5,000 grand prize. Another 51 Sportsman and Streetstocks filled the pit area, bringing the car count to 81 with just three divisions on the card.
