The Niagara Office for the Aging (OFA) today is warning seniors about a scam involving the county's home-delivered meal program. Someone purporting to be from the Niagara County Department of Health is calling and saying a person's home-delivered meals will be canceled if they do not immediately pay for their meals. The caller then attempts to get the senior's personal information.

Settlement to provide discounted broadband to low-income New Yorkers

Gov. Kathy Hochul announced the New York State Public Service Commission reached a settlement agreement with Charter Communications Inc., parent company of broadband provider Spectrum, which operates in 58 out of the 62 counties in New York state, requiring the communications company to provide discounted broadband service to low-income customers in the National Free School Lunch Program or receive Supplemental Security Income benefits.

NFPD find woman injured on road

On Aug. 5, at approximately 1:20 a.m., Niagara Falls Police received a call of an injured woman in the roadway at 22nd Street and Niagara Avenue. Responding officers discovered a 50-year-old Niagara Falls woman with life-threatening injuries. It appears she was operating an e-bike when she was struck by a vehicle that left the scene of the crash.
Niagara County switches website to '.gov' domain

Niagara County Legislature Chairman Becky Wydysh announced the Niagara County website has moved to the ".gov" domain effective today. The county's website will now be www.niagaracounty.gov. Those who go to the old site, www.niagaracounty.com, will automatically be redirected to the new site.

Late in November of 2022, Islander Kim Kalman traveled to Washington, D.C., to donate her bone marrow to someone she had never met. The actual donation occurred on Nov. 23, the day before Thanksgiving. After having been on Be The Match's donor list since 2009, she got the call that she was a match with a 62-year-old man who was "suffering from Myelodysplastic syndrome, which is a group of cancers in which immature blood cells in the bone marrow don't mature and become healthy blood," Kalman explained.

Buffalo man sentenced for rape

Acting Erie County District Attorney Michael J. Keane announced 25-year-old Tamaury Love of Buffalo was sentenced before Erie County Court Judge Susan Eagan to 12 years in prison followed by 15 years of post-release supervision. Love will be required to register as a sex offender upon his release.

On Aug. 15, 2023, the Town of Niagara Town Board approved and went into contract with GAR Associates LLC to perform a townwide reassessment project to be completed on or before July 1, 2025. The town has not had a townwide reassessment since 1991. We are at 33% of our full market value.
