As announced by Mayor Robert Restaino in early August, over the past several weeks the Niagara Falls Police Department, in conjunction with the Niagara County Sheriff's Office and New York State Police, conducted an aggressive driving campaign. It focused on the reports of increased reckless operation of vehicles within the city limits.

Erie County District Attorney John Flynn warns anyone who is knowingly in possession of a falsified COVID-19 vaccine card - and presents that forged document with the intent to deceive another of their vaccination status - can be charged with a felony offense. This alert comes as some local colleges and universities require students to provide proof of vaccination in order return to on-campus residency and in-person learning.

The Erie County Department of Health on Tuesday provided an update on COVID-19 data. For the week ending Aug. 21, ECDOH received reports for 983 new COVID-19 cases among Erie County residents. With a 20% increase from the previous week's total of 811, a steady increase in new COVID-19 cases continues.

Catholic Health, in collaboration with Eastern Niagara Health System, has been awarded $18 million in funding from the New York State Department of Health to ensure the continuation of emergency and acute care hospital services in Eastern Niagara County. Plans announced last October call for Catholic Health to build a 60,000-square-foot hospital off South Transit Road between Shimer Drive and Ruhlmann Road in the Town of Lockport.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Thursday signed legislation (S.5151A/A.65277A) that prohibits schools and school districts from filing any type of lawsuit against parents or guardians for unpaid meal fees. The new law builds on measures from the governor's comprehensive "No Student Goes Hungry" program and helps protect students and families from legal tactics related to their inability to make payments for school meals.
