NYS: New record-high number of COVID-19 tests reported & lowest hospitalizations since March 16

Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Friday announced a new record-high number of COVID-19 test results - 98,880 - were reported to New York state on Thursday. The governor also announced hospitalizations dropped below 500 for the first time, to 490, the lowest number since March 16. The number of ICU patients dropped to 119, the lowest number since March 15. The rate of positive tests - 0.72% - was below 1% for the 14th straight day.

At a virtual event Thursday, the U.S. Department of Transportation's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) kicked off its Labor Day impaired driving high-visibility enforcement campaign, reminding Americans not to drive impaired. This year's high-visibility enforcement will be supported by a $10 million national advertising campaign. Motorists can expect to see increased law enforcement on the road through Sept. 7.

NYS: Nearly $1 million to expand mobile addiction treatment services

Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced $972,717 awarded to five addiction treatment service providers across New York to enable them to purchase and operate mobile treatment vehicles. The goal of this initiative is to expand the availability and access to addiction treatment services in underserved regions of the state. Gov. Cuomo signed a new law Monday, which goes into effect Nov. 1, requiring all passengers to wear a seat belt in the back seat of a motor vehicle, including passengers of ride sharing services like Uber and Lyft. Until now, passengers over age 16 were not required to wear seat belts in the rear seat in New York. The new law, championed by AAA New York state, will save lives and prevent injuries across state roadways by requiring all occupants in a motor vehicle to buckle up.

Andrew Cuomo signed legislation today (S6172/A7331) prohibiting housing providers from discriminating against a person who relies on an animal for assistance alleviating symptoms or the effects of a disability. Housing providers must now provide "a reasonable accommodation by permitting a support animal to live in a home that otherwise would have prohibited pets."

Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Monday announced a Friday deadline for school districts that have not submitted plans for in-person learning. His office claimed 107 school districts had not submitted a plan for in-person learning. Districts that fail to meet the Friday deadline will be unable to provide in-person learning this year.
