Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins and Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie on Wednesday announced the legislative task force on demographic research and reapportionment (LATFOR), Senate Judiciary Committee and Assembly Government Operations Committee will hold a joint legislative hearing Wednesday, July 15, to evaluate the 2014 constitutional amendments providing for independent redistricting in advance of the first redistricting process since their enactment.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, heat-related illnesses, while preventable, are responsible for more than 600 deaths in the U.S. each year. At greatest risk are the elderly, young children, and people with some chronic conditions, such as obesity.

High temperatures can cause serious heat-related illness. Heat-related illnesses occur when the body is unable to properly cool itself through perspiration. People who are more susceptible to heat-related illness are young children, older adults, outside workers, and people with chronic medical conditions.

With heat warnings issued across the region, AAA Western and Central New York is reminding motorists to be aware of the dangers of hot cars. On average, 37 children die in hot cars every year. While an overwhelming majority of these deaths are accidental, such tragedies are often preventable.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Tuesday announced three additional states meet the metrics to qualify for the travel advisory requiring individuals who have traveled to New York from those states, all of which have significant community spread, to quarantine for 14 days. The newly added states are Delaware, Kansas and Oklahoma.

Erie County District Attorney John J. Flynn announced that, in lieu of an in-person community conversation, his office created a virtual speaker series that was distributed Monday to Buffalo Public School students. The video, "Buffalo Strong: Inspirational Moments for Our Youth," features more than a dozen government leaders, community activists and artists from the Buffalo area offering words of encouragement to students who finished the school year at home due to the pandemic.

Almost all research at the University at Buffalo other than that focused on COVID-19 was paused on March 23. The move, a direct result of the growing pandemic, was made to reduce the risk of viral transmission. When UB administrators made that announcement, they noted it was a difficult but necessary decision made after a great deal of thought.

Andrew Cuomo on Thursday announced state outdoor pools across New York will open for swimming for the July 4 weekend under the standard operating schedule of the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation. Pool-goers are reminded to practice social distancing, respect the rules, and do their part to keep the pool area safe for everyone. Pool capacity will be reduced and is expected to fill quickly. New Yorkers are urged to plan ahead by having alternate destinations ready.

Governors in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut announced a travel advisory on June 25 that requires all individuals traveling from states with significant community transmission of COVID-19 to remain under quarantine for a period of 14 days. As of June 30, those states include Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Idaho, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Nevada, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and Utah.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Tuesday announced eight additional states meet the metrics to qualify for the travel advisory requiring individuals who have traveled to New York from those states - all of which have significant community spread - to quarantine for 14 days. The newly added states are California, Georgia, Iowa, Idaho, Louisiana, Mississippi, Nevada and Tennessee. The quarantine applies to any person arriving from a state with a positive test rate higher than 10 per 100,000 residents over a seven-day rolling average or a state with a 10% or higher positivity rate over a seven-day rolling average.

The Wheatfield Town Board held a brief special meeting via Zoom on Monday. Among the announcements, the board declared an end to the town's state of emergency put in place due to the coronavirus. A request from a local softball league to utilize town playing fields was also denied.

Republican New York State Sen. Chris Jacobs is claiming victory in the special election to fill the seat vacated by former Congressman Chris Collins. Late Tuesday, Jacobs claimed to have an insurmountable lead over Democrat and former Town of Grand Island Supervisor Nate McMurray. Currently, his lead is more than 30,000 votes for the NY-27 seat.

Niagara County will open one playground area in each of Krull, Oppenheim and West Canal parks on Friday, and will open the rest of the playground areas next Friday, Niagara County Legislature Chairwoman Becky Wydysh said. Splash pads at Krull and Oppenheim are set to open by the end of June.
