Niagara County Legislature passes Gooch resolution on promoting job openings

A resolution introduced by Legislator Jesse Gooch that would ensure the county's job postings and civil service exams are advertised on the Niagara County website's employment portal as well the jobs board at WorkSourceOne was unanimously passed by the Niagara County Legislature.

U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson announced more than $655 million in Indian Housing Block Grants to Native American Tribes in 38 states. Funding is distributed to eligible tribes and their tribally designated housing entities (TDHEs) to carry out a range of affordable housing activities in their communities.

For the past three years, I've organized the "Light it up for Lymphedema" campaign for the New York State Chapter of the Lymphatic Education & Research Network (LE&RN). The campaign encourages sites around the state and Canada to glow in teal each March 6, World Lymphedema Day, to raise awareness of lymphedema (LE) and lymphatic diseases (LD), chronic swelling conditions that have no cures. If left untreated, LE and LD can lead to deformities, infections and death.

DEC announces new agreements to comprehensively address former Tonawanda Coke facility contamination

New York Department of Environmental Conservation Commissioner Basil Seggos today announced the acceptance of a section of the former Tonawanda Coke Corporation property into the state's brownfield cleanup program, and the execution of a new consent order with Honeywell International to hold the company responsible for the cleanup of other sections of the former plant site under the state's superfund program. Together, the agreements with Riverview Innovation & Technology Campus Inc. (Riverview) and Honeywell provide a successful path forward in the comprehensive removal of contamination at the site and will facilitate the area's redevelopment to benefit the community.

NIH awards UB $21.7 million to continue Buffalo's rapid trajectory growing its health care & research sectors

The University at Buffalo has been awarded a five-year, $21.7 million clinical and translational science award (CTSA) from the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences of the National Institutes of Health in recognition of the dramatic progress UB and its partners have made since 2015 when UB first received the CTSA. Niagara County Clerk Joseph Jastrzemski and Niagara County Legislature Chairwoman Rebecca Wydysh today said Niagara County residents should strongly consider getting passports rather than rely on New York state driver's licenses to meet the TSA requirements for REAL ID for all domestic flights that takes effect on Oct. 1. The new rules require every traveler 18 years of age an older to have at minimum a REAL-ID-compliant driver's license to fly within the U.S.
Office of Mental Health: $45,000 award to Erie County Anti-Stigma Coalition

The New York State Office of Mental Health (OMH) has awarded a $45,000 grant to the Erie County Anti-Stigma Coalition to expand its awareness campaign, "Join the Conversation," into Niagara County. The coalition's campaign promotes mental health awareness and fights the stigma surrounding mental illness, which can be a barrier preventing people from seeking the help and treatment they need.

New York State Homes and Community Renewal (HCR) announced final submission deadlines for outstanding eligibility documents required to process priority homeowner applications submitted for the 2019 Lake Ontario-St. Lawrence River Flood Relief and Recovery Program. The request for documents applies only to homeowners who submitted applications in priority categories during the eligible application periods. New applications are not being accepted.

At 10:33 p.m. Saturday, Lewiston Fire Co. No. 1 was dispatched to the Woods at Blairville apartment complex in the 800 block of Oriole Lane for a reported structure fire. Crews were faced with heavy fire in two apartments upon arrival and immediately deployed to begin knocking back the flames as additional crews entered to search for anyone still inside.
