The City of Niagara Falls, in collaboration with the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, Niagara Parks, Niagara Falls Illumination Board, Atlantis School For Gifted Youngsters, Haudenosaunee (Six Nations) Elders, and Niagara River Iroquois Dancers, will kick off the opening ceremony for Indigenous Peoples weekend at 6 p.m. Thursday at Terrapin Point in Niagara Reservation State Park.

Empire State Development, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and Buffalo Niagara Waterkeeper on Tuesday celebrated the grand opening of the $2 million renovated Buffalo Blueway site, DEC's Buffalo River - Ohio Street fishing access site. The ESD-funded project, completed by BNW, adds to the network of public access points along the city's waterways as part of the Buffalo Blueway project, a regional effort to improve and enhance waterfront access and opportunities for recreation.

Special Olympics New York has opened student registration for its first "Cool School Polar Plunge," an entire day dedicated to Western New York students who commit to raising funds for local Special Olympics athletes by plunging into the cold water at Woodlawn Beach State Park on Friday, Dec. 3. First Student will award $1,000 scholarships to the top male and female fundraisers, who will also be crowned "king and queen" at the event.

New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Commissioner Basil Seggos announced the release of a proposed regulation that, if adopted, would allow counties to opt out of the recently established end-of-year deer hunt, slated to occur annually between Dec. 26 and Jan. 1. The "holiday hunt" is an extension of the late bow and muzzleloader deer season in New York's southern zone.
