Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Tuesday announced all New Yorkers enrolled in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program will receive the maximum allowable level of food benefits for July. The agency is also working with the federal government to ensure this aid, which has brought in more than $2.5 billion in food assistance to New Yorkers since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic last year, will continue beyond July.

Niagara County Department of Public Works Commissioner Garret Meal on Monday announced the pending closing of Bear Ridge Road, between Fiegel and Irish roads, for a bridge replacement beginning Monday, July 19. Electronic message boards warning travelers the road is scheduled to be closed, except for local traffic, are already in operation.

The Diocese of Buffalo recently became aware of an action brought pursuant to the Child Victims Act by an individual who alleges she was abused as a child in the early 1980s at parish of St. Matthew by Rev. Msgr. Leo McCarthy (88), a retired priest of the Diocese of Buffalo, who continues to assist in parish ministry. The complaint was not served on the diocese, but was discovered during a recent search of publicly filed complaints.

Shortly before 5 a.m. Tuesday morning, Niagara Falls Police Department responded to 1028 South Ave., for a report of an unresponsive man found in the hallway. Upon arrival, an officer located a deceased, 42-year-old Niagara Falls resident who had sustained multiple gunshot wounds.

Andrew Cuomo signed into law Ryan's legislation (S.5992), which increases the amount of low-cost power available to small businesses and not-for-profit organizations through the New York Power Authority's "ReCharge NY" program. The amount of power available through the program has risen from 100 megawatts to 150 megawatts.

The New York State Department of Taxation and Finance reminded taxpayers to review their eligibility for The Child Tax Credit. The American Rescue Plan increased the Child Tax Credit to $3,600 per child for children under 6 years old and $3,000 per child for children ages 6-17. The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) will begin distributing monthly payments of up to $300 per child to eligible families in the coming weeks; the remaining half of the 2021 credits must be claimed on income tax returns filed next spring.

Wednesday at Legends Park in the City of Niagara Falls, Mayor Robert Restaino joined Niagara County Sheriff Michael Filicetti, along with Victory Sports Global Outreach founder and Executive Director Doug Rifenburg, for the announcement of a partnership between law enforcement agencies and Victory Sports. The goal of the partnership is to outfit police cars with sports equipment allowing officers the opportunity to add another tool to their belt.
