Erie County Medical Center Corp. on Monday announced the hospital's medical intensive care unit (MICU) has again been awarded a silver-level American Association of Critical Care Nurses (AACN) Beacon Award for Excellence, which is a three-year designation highlighting the unit's achievement of exceptional care through improved outcomes and greater overall patient satisfaction. ECMC's MICU had previously received the silver-level Beacon Award for Excellence in June 2017 and is one of 16 silver- level Beacon awards in New York for 2020.

The New York State Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance (OTDA) announced more than $100 million in additional emergency food assistance for New Yorkers adversely affected by the unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic. About 750,000 low-income individuals and families enrolled in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) will receive the maximum allowable benefit for June to help them avoid food insecurity.

The Alzheimer's Foundation of America's (AFA) will host a free virtual educational conference as part of its national Educating America Tour to help New Yorkers affected by Alzheimer's disease during the COVID-19 crisis. The event will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 16. It is designed to provide information and advice from health, legal and caregiving experts. Niagara County Legislator Rich Andres on Tuesday announced the Niagara County Department of Emergency Services has goggles available for hair salons and barbershops to help them meet the state reopening guidelines. Andres said the guidelines initially required face shields, but now have been amended by New York state to include goggles.

The recently enacted Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) Flexibility Act provides additional clarity and flexibility for small business owners to meet the requirements of the PPP loan program created by the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act. When the president signed the bipartisan legislation into law, it gave more time and discretion for when and how the loans can be spent to keep employees on payroll and keep up with accounts payable to further assist the nation's economy in its recovery from COVID-19 closures.

The board of directors and the executive director are happy to announce that Lockport CARES will re-open Monday June 15, at our 188 Genesee St. shelter, with modifications, to accept men, women and families experiencing emergency homelessness. Beginning with our 7 p.m. shift on Monday, June 15, guests will be welcomed into our shelter from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. seven days a week. This new modification will continue for 30 days and then be reconsidered based on safety factors and overall effectiveness of the shelter.

Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo on Sunday signed legislation (S.8130-D/A.10516-A) extending the deadline to submit absentee ballots until the day of the election. To be counted, primary ballots must be postmarked by June 23. The governor previously issued executive orders allowing all New Yorkers to vote absentee in the June 23 primary elections and ensuring every New Yorker registered to vote receives a postage-paid absentee ballot application in the mail.

On Fridays, June 5-19, the Herb and Aaron Siegel Foundation will spearhead an effort to deliver meals across the East Side of Buffalo in order to address food insecurity during the COVID-19 pandemic. With the support of partners Rich Products, Back to Basics Outreach Ministries, Citizen Action of New York, Foundation for Jewish Philanthropies, Jewish Family Services and the Buffalo Olmsted Parks Conservancy, the Siegel Foundation will donate 1,000 meals on each of those days to families during these difficult times.
