The New York Power Authority board of trustees on Tuesday approved $1.1 million in additional funding to help New York's municipal and rural electric cooperative systems bring more hybrid and electric vehicles into their fleets. The additional financial assistance, available through the Municipal and Rural Cooperative Electric Utilities Electric-Drive Vehicle Program, will expand a long-running clean energy partnership that encourages electric vehicle use and reduces greenhouse gas emissions across New York.

The Niagara County Office for the Aging has begun distributing farmers market coupon booklets at sites throughout Niagara County. The Senior Farmers' Market Nutrition Program, provided by the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets, provides coupons to all who meet age and income requirements. Each booklet contains five coupons worth $4 each ($20 total), which can be used to buy fresh, locally grown fruits and vegetables at participating farmers' markets throughout New York.

On June 30, Tom Gerbasi's first act as Rotary Club assistant district governor was to install Leslie Scibilia as club president of the Bi-National Rotary Club of Lewiston & Niagara-on-the-Lake. Scibilia said she hopes to continue Rotary's humanitarian projects in the communities it serves on both sides of the Niagara River, as well as in the wider world.

Local good Samaritan Steve Denn helps Ohio tourists get back to Niagara Falls. Denn, watering the new grass along his Lower River Road property, was approached by the tourists who were in need of water for their 1909 Stanley Steamer Model R. The vintage vehicle holds 20 gallons and gets one mile per gallon. Denn was told that his water hose was "like gold."

CAL's Convenience Inc. is expected to reopen the Sunoco gas station and APlus market in coming weeks at 890 Center St., Lewiston. The front doors were opened in past days, as trucks delivered products and people worked on redoing the store interior. A help wanted sign is now on the glass windows.

Some, he said, are even scared of motorists heading the wrong way down the street, or hitting a vehicle backing out of one of the parking lots.

Over Memorial Day weekend, Hibbard's Original Frozen Custard held a fundraiser for VFW Downriver Post 7487, which maintains the "Circle of Honor" memorial across the street in Academy Park. Proceeds from the custard cookies - a collaboration between Hibbard's and the Village Bake Shoppe - will go toward upkeep at the tribute to Lewiston veterans.

Guided by its strategic plan to provide excellence in all phases of the student living-learning experience, Niagara University will break ground next month on an $11.5 million upgrade to the Kiernan Recreation Center. Project construction is scheduled to begin in July, and the renovation is expected to be completed for the fall 2022 semester. Funding for the project includes a $1 million grant from the NYS Higher Education Capital Matching program (HECap), as well as other private donations and university investments.
