From René-Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle to Capt. Pierre Pouchot, the French had a significant presence on the Niagara River for almost 100 years from 1669 to 1759. From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 7, Old Fort Niagara will celebrate that history and present French Heritage Day in cooperation with the American Association of Teachers of French.

Tom Reubens, a graduate of the Wilson Central School District (Class of 2007), was an All-State athlete and scholar, with a great love of history and nature. His life was cut short by a little known cardiac illness called Brugada syndrome. In his honor, the Reubens family has created a scholarship to support student athletes, and Niagara Family Medicine Associates has donated a tree that was planted at Wilson Elementary School last Friday.

The Greater Niagara Fishing and Outdoor Expo, one of the largest pure-fishing shows in the Great Lakes, is postponing its popular event at the Conference and Event Center Niagara Falls due to COVID-19. Conference Center officials are following New York state guidelines, as well as Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommendations, regarding what protocols need to be followed in an effort to keep attendees, vendors and Conference Center staff safe.

The Buffalo Museum of Science announced "Golden Mummies of Egypt," presented by M&T Bank, will extend its stay in Buffalo to Jan. 3, 2021. Originally slated to end this month, the exhibit will continue its global premiere in Western New York. Guests can visit "Golden Mummies of Egypt" from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.

The Health Association of Niagara County Inc. - better known as HANCI - announced Tuesday it is the recipient of a $30,000 grant award from KeyBank, in partnership with the First Niagara Foundation. The grant was awarded to the nonprofit to implement a frontline worker education and care coordination/telehealth program.

Last Friday, the United Way of Greater Niagara announced the start of its 2020 fundraising campaign at the Four Points Sheridan Hotel in Niagara Falls. The organization says this year's campaign, which will run through Nov. 30, is more critical than ever as community groups continue to struggle with the effects of COVID-19. Funds raised throughout will continue to support 29 agencies focused on a spectrum of human services throughout the Niagara Region.

SPCA's "Paws for Love" program was recently approved for stress relief events for essential workers. As such, the pups visited Mount St. Mary's Hospital for some stress-reducing therapy on Thursday, in the grassy grove between Mount St. Mary's and Our Lady of Peace Nursing Home. Pet owners and their sweet dogs greeted hospital staff, physicians and nurses.

The Giving Project has teamed up with Buffalo Black Achievers to raise funds and awareness for the Black Achiever Scholarship Fund, established at the recommendation of Dr. Catherine Collins, who currently serves as the chairperson of Buffalo Black Achievers. Niagara University folklorist Edward Yong Jun Millar recently received an Archie Green Fellowship from the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress to document and preserve the stories, experiences, knowledge and traditions of workers involved with the Ransomville Speedway. His is one of only seven projects in 2020 to have been awarded this competitive annual national fellowship.

The Lewiston Lions understands local food pantries are under tremendous pressure, with increased demand and decreased donations. The club was able to make donations to several food pantry locations during quarantine: Care-N-Share (Inter Community Services), Word of Life Ministries and the Magdalene Project. In addition to a monetary donation, 40 face masks were also donated to the Word of Life Ministries for distribution to those who may need one.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Wednesday announced the start of timber construction on the Buffalo Heritage Carousel project at Canalside. The project consists of a new building near the corner of Prime and Perry streets to house the near-century-old De Angelis Carousel. The carousel is planned to open in the summer of 2021.
