A proposal to build a new structure on vacant land at 860 Center St., Lewiston, was tabled Monday by both the Historic Preservation Commission and Planning Commission. This action was at the request of architect Jim Fittante, who said his client needs additional time to consider crafting a structure more in keeping with the village's preferred aesthetic.

On Monday evening, the Grand Island Town Board passed by a 4-0 vote a resolution expressing opposition to Erie County's mask mandate, which went into effect Nov. 23. In the resolution, the councilmembers went on record as opposing any future mask mandates, vaccination mandates, or any other COVID-19 restrictions. It requested the town and the state refrain from enforcing the mask mandate on Grand Island.

Trustees in the Village of Lewiston were pleased with last weekend's Christmas Walk festivities. They were particularly impressed with the debut Lewiston Holiday Lights Parade, which was organized by the Niagara River Region Chamber of Commerce.

Christmas Walk weekend wrapped Sunday night with the inaugural Lewiston Christmas Lights Parade. The one-hour event featured floats and decorated first-responder vehicles, as well as dancers, costumed characters, musical performances and local nonprofits. Families lined the roadway to watch, cheer, take pictures and collect candy.

It was a proud moment when Pfc. Charles N. DeGlopper's 100th birthday was celebrated Nov. 30 by the Grand Island VFW post named in his honor and in memory that he died a hero in the Battle of Normandy.

At the "Lindsey Stirling Holiday Program," fans expect a mix of hit songs - plus new music from "Artemis," a musical collection Stirling turned into a comic book series - and selections from "Warmer in the Winter." Stirling's holiday album is a fun collection of Christmas covers - including "You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch," "Santa Baby" and "Somewhere In My Memory (Main Title From 'Home Alone')." The virtuoso violinist also sings on "I Wonder as I Wander."

During the 2021 spring semester, senior Maren Geiger began her endeavors of bringing awareness to sexual health and wellness on Niagara University's campus. After gathering information and having many conversations, Geiger's Sexual Wellness Initiative (SWI) was formed. It is a coalition (not affiliated with Niagara University) of almost 40 students who are dedicated to educating students about sexual wellness.

Everyone affiliated with the school knows its president, Rev. James J. Maher, C.M., more commonly known as Father Maher. They see his face all over the university on posters and stickers, in pictures and in person. However, most students would not know that he used to play baseball and basketball or that he loves to travel and has been to multiple countries in Southeast Asia.

Clothing has no gender and Harry Styles is just one of many celebrities that prove that. The singer/songwriter has been on tour since the first weekend of September with his opening show for his "Love On Tour" in Las Vegas. He opened his tour sporting a pair of fuchsia-colored trousers and a magenta vest that was covered in sparkling fringe.

Before every game, the Niagara Men's Club Lacrosse team breaks out of its huddle as a team, under this exact chant. Lacrosse is a team sport that is highly competitive, even if it is only at the club level. Many students at Niagara University create their own time to dedicate and commit themselves to this team.

Movie media has changed during the COVID-19 pandemic, for the best and for the worst. For streaming services, they are receiving the best viewership they have ever seen before, while movie theater companies are taking substantial losses. What used to be filled movie theaters watching the latest blockbuster Marvel movie, has now been replaced by watching the new movie from the comfort of one's home on a streaming service.

Waking up at 7:30 a.m. and seeing some darkness outside. You get out of bed and realize today is a Monday. Why else would you be getting up at 7:30 a.m.? After getting ready to leave the house, you go out to the car with a cup of coffee and begin your morning commute. You pull into the university, and begin walking to class where you see some friends walking ... some still in pajamas.

Have you ever thought about how helpless many of the world's population are? In many areas of the world, poverty is a big issue that is faced. The country of focus will be India as it contains a significant number of impoverished areas. One of Niagara University's students and close friends is from there and he told a story of when he encountered poverty. During the summer, he was sitting outside of his uncle's house and he could sense that there was something very foul heading towards him which was right around the corner.

The Village of Lewiston Planning Commission on Monday granted preliminary site plan approval for what was described as a national urgent care company to erect and operate a structure at 860 Center St. The parcel has been vacant since April 2012, when the building that now houses the Niagara River Region Chamber of Commerce office was transported from the site and moved across the street to Academy Park.
