On March 1, John Faso was sworn in as the superintendent of police for the Niagara Falls Police Department. He had been acting as the interim chief for the department since December, after the retirement of the former police chief, Thomas Licata.

Barring a monumental miracle by June 1, the Toronto Blue Jays will again call downtown Buffalo's Sahlen Field home. The Canadian government has yet to grant them approval to return to the Rogers Centre. With COVID-19 cases on the rise in Canada, and Ontario recently entering another lockdown, it is unlikely the Jays will return to the field they last called home in 2019 anytime soon.

Since our last edition, things have really progressed on a number of fronts: The state budget was finalized in Albany, and new guidance was (finally) released by the New York State Department of Health, aligning to the updated guidance from the CDC related to social distancing in schools. We have moved quickly to advance both the 2021-22 budget and plans to return students to campus under the new guidance.

The ballot is taking shape in the Niagara Wheatfield Central School District for the annual budget vote to be held Tuesday, May 18. The Board of Education recently passed motions setting its expenditure budget for the 2021-22 school year at $79,222,507, and the tax levy limit to $34,720,519 - an increase of 1.99% from last year. Both motions were passed unanimously.

The move comes amid significant public outcry to the project and pushback from neighboring communities.
