Mike Ratka of Grand Island said he never enters contests. But, encouraged by friends and neighbors this fall, he submitted "Pumpkin eating pumpkin" into Niagara Frontier Publications' annual pumpkin-carving competition. The move paid off, as he was voted the winner and took home a gift card courtesy of DiMino Tops Lewiston.

The Niagara Town Board took some time to honor a local man on his way to serve the country. William Jasper III, a volunteer firefighter for the town, will soon be headed to the United States Air Force - and his hometown was on hand to say "thank you."

Members of the Salvation Army, as well as local officials kicked off the Red Kettle Campaign at Budwey's Market in North Tonawanda on Oct. 6. The kick-off marks the beginning of the holiday season for the Salvation Army and its goal of raising $170,000 from the red kettles in various locations in North Tonawanda, Tonawanda and Grand Island during the Christmas season.
