Lockport CARES Homeless Shelter will hold a yard sale/open house/chowder sale from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Sept. 18-19, at 188 and 192 Genesee St. Chowder will be sold for $2 a bowl or $5 a quart.

Continuing its "Summer of Smiles" celebration, IHOP restaurants announced it has joined forces with No Kid Hungry to curtail childhood hunger. IHOP and No Kid Hungry share the philosophy that starting the day with breakfast, and a smile, is extremely important, and have targeted a goal of providing 2.5 million meals this year.

State Sen. Rob Ortt has announced more than $47,000 in state funding was awarded to three public libraries in Niagara County in need of upgrades. The money was secured in the 2014-15 state budget as part of the $14 million capital funding program for construction and renovation of public libraries and public library systems in New York.

The Erie County Department of Senior Services was awarded a grant of $780,169 from Senior Service America Inc. Almost 90 percent of this grant, which originated from the U.S. Department of Labor, will pay wages and benefits to at least 126 low-income older adults living in Erie County.

More than 25 area restaurants are expected to showcase their culinary expertise during the inaugural Taste of Niagara Falls, on Old Falls Street, USA. The two-day family-friendly food festival is planned for Labor Day weekend, Sept. 5 and 6, from noon to 8 p.m.
