The facility siting board and Department of Environmental Conservation Commissioner Joe Martens extended the public comment period by 45 days for Chemical Waste Management's application to construct and operate a new landfill at the company's existing facility in the towns of Porter and Lewiston due to extensive public interest and requests for additional time to comment on the permit application.

Assemblyman John Ceretto applauded the decision of the state Department of Environmental Conservation to extend the public comment period on the proposed expansion of the CWM landfill by 45 days to Oct. 20. Ceretto sent a letter to the DEC commissioner asking for this extension to be granted.

As the sun set on the midway Sunday, daredevil and high-wire artist Nik Wallenda eased his way along a 1,400-foot wire, 125 feet in the air, over the 175th Erie County Fair. Record-breaking crowds watched in anticipation as Wallenda navigated the wire, which was the size of a nickel in diameter, slowly and cautiously to the finish.
