Paddles Up Niagara, the Niagara River Greenway Commission's annual paddle sports event, returns to Grand Island for its ninth year of operation.
The main attraction of Paddles Up is its 4.8-mile paddle from the Little Beaver Launch Site to the East River Marsh Site and back.

On June 12, Jessica Lamson and Brian Zuch were honored with the Niagara-Wheatfield Kiwanis' 2014 scholarship awards. The recipients and their families were treated to dinner at the Jetport Family Restaurant before Kiwanis President Mary Dohm presented the scholarship awards.

Residents in Grand Island are about to benefit from a national backpack giveaway campaign.
The Cellular Connection, the largest Verizon Premium Wireless retailer in the U.S., in a joint effort with its customers, has announced that it will donate 100,000 backpacks full of school supplies to children through its School Rocks Backpack Giveaway. Last year, the company donated 60,000 backpacks.
More than 350 participating TCC stores across the U.S. are inviting local families to bring their children to the store between noon and 2 p.m. on Aug. 2 to pick up a backpack filled with pencils, paper, a pencil box, folders, glue and more.

New York State Sen. Mark Grisanti recently named Kelly Carrigg as the seventh recipient of his "Veteran of the Month" recognition program.
A resident of the Town of Hamburg who served with the 82nd Airborne Division, Carrigg is the seventh recipient of the monthly honor presented by Grisanti. She was awarded following an application and nomination process coordinated by staff members in Grisanti's veterans liaison office.

The New York State Department of Health has awarded a $376,000 grant to Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center to support the launch of an innovative program to support family members caring for Medicaid beneficiaries at home and in the community.
The program, called "Building Bridges to Home and Community Care," will restructure the hospital discharge process to ensure better post-hospital care and reduce hospital readmissions and nursing home stays, thereby generating more than $2.3 million in Medicaid savings between now and September 2015.

Wednesday, after America's vote was revealed on "So You Think You Can Dance," Tanisha Belnap, Brooklyn Fullmer, Bridget Whitman, Zack Everhart, Marcquet Hill and Serge Onik were the three girls and three guys who received the fewest votes. The judges - Nigel Lythgoe, Mary Murphy and guest judge Misty Copeland - determined at the end of the show that Fullmer and Hill would be sent home.
