Sally Jeanette Meyer Chandler, born in Buffalo, on Dec. 17, 1925, passed away peacefully on May 8, 2014, in Austin, Texas, after an extended struggle with Alzheimer's Disease.

The Lewiston Police Department suffered a loss in its K-9 unit Wednesday. "Radar," a tracking, drug recognition and patrol dog, was put down. He had been diagnosed with splenic cancer at Cornell University.

The following incidents occurred from May 12 to 18, as reported by the Grand Island Fire Co. A total of 37 calls were answered by the department during this period. The GIFC has now responded to 542 calls so far this year, as compared with 499 calls at this time in 2013.

Town, county and state government officials praised the Grand Island Fire Co. for its proud tradition of community service for the past 76 years. This anniversary celebration tool place at fire headquarters on Saturday, May 17, and was well attended by family members and special guests, including local fire service officers.

Board of Directors Chairman Greg Butcher noted that the GIFC has kept pace with increased membership recruitment demands and took in a class of six rookies during 2014. Personal sacrifice is nothing new to members of the volunteer fire service, who provide more than 70 percent of fire and emergency medical services protection throughout the United States. He concluded that GIFC accomplishments to date would indicate that the township is "in very good hands."

Cuomo announces partnership to support Troops-To-Energy jobs initiative

Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo announced a partnership with industry leaders from five electric and gas utilities to develop a plan that places veterans returning back home in jobs in the utility industry. The plan supports objectives that emerged from the New York State Veterans and Military Families Summit held in March, which focused on the state's efforts to support veterans and the military community.

"New York's veterans have made tremendous sacrifices in service to our nation, and by expanding professional opportunities for them at home we can help to ease their transition back to civilian life and empower them for years to come," Cuomo said.

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo announced Wednesday the New York Power Authority board of trustees approved new allocations of low-cost hydropower for four firms in Western New York that will support 335 jobs and more than $28 million in capital investments in the region.

"By providing upstate manufacturers with the means to grow their operations, we are strengthening the economy and providing new opportunities for New Yorkers in the region," Cuomo said. "These latest low-cost hydropower allocations are giving companies in Western New York the support they need to lower their overhead costs, expand their workforce, and refocus on growing their business well into the future."
