In honor of the many brave troops serving this nation overseas, Assemblywoman Jane Corwin is partnering with Congressman Chris Collins, State Sen. George Maziarz, the Blue Star Mothers, Boy Scouts of America and a number of local grocery stores to collect items for care packages to send to the men and women stationed in remote areas around the globe. This inaugural "Support Our Troops" drive is open to the public to make contributions through May and June.
"As Memorial Day approaches, I am hopeful that our community will take time to reflect on the many freedoms that we have as Americans, and the price of that freedom, as we remember and honor those who have sacrificed so much to defend our way of life," Corwin said.

Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman has released a new report prepared by his environmental protection bureau detailing the dangers microbeads - tiny plastic beads that are included in many commercial cosmetic products - pose to New York's waterways. The report, titled "Unseen Threat: How Microbeads Harm New York Waters, Wildlife, Health And Environment," highlights the need to pass the attorney general's Microbead-Free Waters Act, proposed earlier this year. This bill would make New York the first in the nation to ban the sale of products containing microbeads.

Niagara-Wheatfield's annual budget vote and school board election will be held from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday, May 20, in the Adult Learning Center at the high school, 2292 Saunders Settlement Road, Sanborn.
On the ballot will be the district's proposed budget for 2014-15, a transportation proposition and a choice of six candidates for three open board of education seats.
Running for three-year terms on the board will be Dana Andrews, incumbent Christopher Peters, incumbent Richard Halleen, Gina Terbot, Dr. Daniel Haick and Darren Sneed. Previously announced candidate Danny Maerten recently withdrew from the race for personal reasons.
