Democrats out of Lewiston election; Symmonds vows to continue run for mayor

In a shocking turn of events Wednesday, the Lewiston Democratic Party candidates appointed to run in the June 17 Village of Lewiston election were ruled ineligible. Village Clerk Anne Welch disqualified mayoral candidate Jamie Symmonds and trustee candidate Jacqueline Lampman on the grounds their party failed to adhere to state election law.

Section 15-108(2)(c) states "Notice must be filed in the offices of the village clerk and the county board of elections at least 10 days before the scheduled caucus."

Welch said she did not receive notice from the Democrats of their caucus, which was held Tuesday, nor was a public announcement posted in her office.

Jamie Symmonds will represent the party in the June 17 election. She was nominated during Tuesday's Democratic Party caucus.

Colvin Cleaners breaking records with 9th annual 'Gowns 4 Prom' charity event

This week, Colvin Cleaners, Western New York's "green" dry cleaner, will ramp up its efforts to celebrate "Gowns 4 Prom." The ninth annual charity event will be held 3-7 p.m. April 21-23 on stage at Shea's in downtown Buffalo. This year, with the help of Goodwill, TT New York, Continental Hair School, Boulevard Mall and Walden Galleria Mall, Colvin Cleaners has collected more than 4,000 donations of gently used gowns for girls in need to pick up for free during "Gowns 4 Prom."

This year will mark the highest number of dresses given out in the history of "Gowns 4 Prom." Over the past eight years, "Gowns 4 Prom" has given out more than 5,000 dresses. Colvin Cleaners expects to give out 1,000 this year alone.

DiNapoli: New York on stronger financial footing

New York state ended the 2013-14 fiscal year in the strongest fiscal position in years and was able to deposit $175 million in the Rainy Day Reserve Fund for the first time since 2008, according to a report on the recently enacted state budget released by State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli.

Still, the $143 billion budget continues to rely, in part, on temporary funding streams to attain balance.

"After a tough few years, New York state is in better fiscal shape thanks to an improving economy and difficult fiscal choices made by the Governor and the Legislature," DiNapoli said. "

Town of Wheatfield: Board approves Fairmount Park site proposed by Veterans Memorial Focus Group

The Wheatfield Town Board on Monday hired a consultant to give advice on the Quasar matter, approved a veterans memorial and determined to seek out a culprit in a vandalism case.

The board also unanimously approved the Fairmount Park site proposed by its Veterans Memorial Focus Group for the town's new veterans memorial.
