The University at Buffalo Confucius Institute and the Chinese Club of Western New York will celebrate the Chinese Lunar Year of the (energetic, bright, warm-hearted, intelligent and able) Horse on Feb. 2 with its annual free public performance of music, dance and Chinese martial arts.

Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo has announced that work will begin on Western New York's first design-build project to strengthen infrastructure in Niagara County. The project is composed of a $41.1 million rehabilitation of the three bridges carrying I-190 and NY Route 265 (Military Road) over the New York Power Authority reservoir in the towns of Niagara and Lewiston.
Cuomo passed New York's first design-build law in 2011, "streamlining the bureaucracy of major infrastructure projects to speed construction schedules and reduce cost."

The Grand Island Board of Education held its monthly meeting on Monday evening, Jan. 13, in the new Professional Development room in Grand Island High School. Part of the district's three-year multimillion dollar project, the former senior cafeteria has a new ceiling and lighting, three SMART boards, which are used for teacher and staff training, and some new furniture. The public premiere of the room is one of the many visible changes to the high school, including the STEM addition on Ransom Road where, despite last week's blizzard, work has progressed and is "on schedule," according to Vaughn Maracle of Campus Construction Management.

Congressman Brian Higgins, D-NY-26, has prepared legislation that will ease the ability for Canadians to own a home and live in the U.S. while working in Canada. The bill is aimed at providing new economic opportunities for the Buffalo/Niagara region while giving Canadians affordable living options just over the border.
"From our automobile factories to sports franchises and vacation rental properties, to retail outlets, the economies of Western New York and Southern Ontario are already deeply connected," Higgins said.
