At 2 a.m. this coming Sunday, Nov. 3, we all will set our clocks back one hour in accordance with Daylight Saving Time. We often think of Daylight Saving Time as a time we either get an extra hour of sleep or we lose one, but when it comes to life safety we hope to encourage you to use this time for more than setting your clocks.

At a crowded Grand Island Board of Education meeting Monday evening, Veronica Connor Middle School Assistant Principal Eleanor Payne received official recognition from the American Heart Association for her administering of CPR on one of her students who had collapsed in full cardiac arrest in a school hallway Sept. 9.

Fundraising efforts to build a new playground at Kaegebein Elementary School received a hand from a neighboring business. Kevin Slachciak, owner of Say Cheese Pizza Company, located just up Love Road from Kaegebein Elementary, presented the Kaegebein Playground Committee with a check for $750.

The penalties for driving while distracted in New York state are finally catching up with a problem that seems to grow more serious each day.
We have all seen motorists talking on their cellphones as they navigate busy thoroughfares and small neighborhood streets alike. Do drivers who try to conceal their smartphones by pressing their entire device between their ear and the palm of their hand actually think the ruse is working?

The Lewiston Community Lions Club's fifth annual peace poster contest was recently held at the Stella Niagara Education Park. The event, chaired by Lion Marlene Craft and Lion's President Ron Craft, boated 58 entries from Stella Niagara, St. Peter's Roman Catholic and St. Peter's Lutheran schools. This year's theme for the contest was "Our World, Our Future."

Empire State Development has announced Empire Specialty Cheese Co. LLC will invest $6.37 million to expand its business in New York state. The company will purchase and upgrade an idle manufacturing facility in Chautauqua County to accommodate new and existing cheese production processes, resulting in the creation of 204 new jobs.
Empire State Development, the state's economic development agency, assisted Empire Specialty Cheese Co. with its expansion project by providing $650,000 in Excelsior Job Program tax credits.

The Governor's Office of Motion Picture and Television Development held a "New York Loves Film Production Roadshow" Monday at WNED studios in Buffalo. Hosted by the Buffalo Niagara Film Office, the workshop featured two 60-minute face-to-face conversations with filmmakers, production support, small business owners, post-production providers and New York government representatives discussing film production practices and issues across the state.

Assemblyman John Ceretto, R-C-I-Lewiston, said he is pleased the next steps in the redesign of the Robert Moses Parkway can now take place. Ceretto wrote a letter to Gov.
