Grisanti delivers $200,000 for Orchard Park

New York State Sen. Mark Grisanti, who serves as chairman of the Senate Environmental Conservation Committee, has announced that, after working with town officials in Orchard Park, he has been able to secure $200,000 to help replace Green Lake Dam.

Green Lake Dam was recently reclassified by the state Department of Environmental Conservation from an intermediate hazard to a high hazard, which drew concerns from many residents and community stakeholders in Orchard Park.

When sitting in the coffee shop one Friday morning, I got a cell phone call from "Big Joe" asking if I wanted to go fishing the river that morning. After a "quick think," my wife said, "Go, get going; you don't need to do anything today." She was right; the only thing I needed to do was to go fishing. I'm always happy to go when Big Joe calls, I've known him all his life, and he turned out to be a darned good fisherman.

NSF grant funds UB communication research into anti-phishing models

The Town of Grand Island will honor veterans of past military campaigns during the annual Veterans Day program. This year, the town will honor veterans of the Cold War, Iraq War and Afghanistan War.

Veterans, family members, and friends are invited to attend the program on Monday, Nov. 11, at 11 a.m. at Veterans Park, located at 1717 Bedell Road. Each Veteran will receive a memento.

Grand Island veterans are asked to notify the Recreation Department if they will attend the program on Nov. 11, or if a veteran will be represented by a family member.

NYPA Power Vista celebrates 7 million visitors, honors builders Oct. 28

The New York Power Authority will recognize the "Hard Hats of Niagara" on Monday, Oct. 28, at 11 a.m., at the Power Vista, the visitors center for the Niagara Hydroelectric Plant. The occasion will mark the 50th anniversary of the construction of the Power Vista and will mark the attendance milestone of welcoming 7 million visitors since the facility first opened its doors in 1963.

At the event, representatives of NYPA senior management will honor the "Hard Hats of Niagara," a group of former construction workers who built the power plant and the Power Vista.
