State Sen. George Maziarz has announced the day has finally arrived: the WNY Heroes trip flies today! Twenty-eight World War II and Korean veterans from Western New York were flown this morning to Washington, D.C., to visit the World War II Memorial, Korean War Memorial and other area monuments and memorials.

Entertainment will ring out the year with world-famous singer and actress Vanessa Williams at Seneca Niagara Events Center on Dec. 28, followed by a boisterous rock performance by Cheap Trick on Dec. 29 at Seneca Allegany Events Center.

New York state spending declined for the second straight year in fiscal year 2012-13 while debt reached an all-time high of $63.5 billion, according to the annual report on the financial condition of New York state released by Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli.
"State policy decisions in the past three years have helped New York better align state spending with revenue, but difficulties remain," DiNapoli said.

Assemblyman John Ceretto, R-C-I-Lewiston, said he is disappointed in the decision made by New York State Education Commissioner John King to cancel a series of forums for public comment on common core standards. Reid Capizzi, pictured, infant son of Mike and Laura Suess-Capizzi of Lewiston, has been selected as the baby who will be part of the dramatic re-enactment that will take place during the unveiling of the Tuscarora Heroes Monument on Dec. 19. The re-enactment will depict the burning of Lewiston by the British in 1813, when Lewiston citizens ran for their lives down Center Street to escape.
