Community Missions to hold community prayer service

Community Missions will hold an ecumenical community prayer service on Tuesday, Oct. 8, as part of The National Day of Prayer for Mental Illness Recovery and Understanding. The service will be held from 3:30 to 4:15 p.m., with light refreshments to follow the service.

The prayer service is open to the public and will be held at the First Congregational United Church of Christ, 822 Cleveland Ave., Niagara Falls (details and directions here).

This National Day of Prayer is part of Mental Illness Awareness Week, which begins Oct. 6.

State Sen. George Maziarz, R-C-Newfane, has announced the introduction of bills S5935 and S5936, which aim to help control the cost of the state pension system. Under current law, officers and employees of private organizations such as the state Association of Counties, the state School Boards Association and the Association of Towns are all eligible to participate in New York's retirement system.

The Lewiston Public Library will be hosting a special book signing on Saturday, Sept. 28, at noon, for a new and unique work penned by three local authors. "Have Mercy; a Nursing Memoir," written in a five-year period by Mary Herbst, Maureen Ott and Maureen Weber, chronicles memories of their attendance at the Mercy Hospital School of Nursing (presently Trocaire College in Buffalo) from 1960 to 1963.

While libraries are known to be quiet places, Niagara Falls is definitely buzzing with activity as the New York State Library Association's three-day annual conference has returned to The Conference & Event Center Niagara Falls. The event began on Thursday and runs through Saturday. It has brought more than 600 attendees and 90 vendors, and an estimated 800 room nights in downtown Niagara Falls hotels. This equates to $750,000 of economic impact on the Niagara Falls community.
Maziarz: Niagara Wine Trail expansion signed into law

State Sen. George Maziarz has announced Gov. Andrew Cuomo has signed into law a measure (S.1095-A) that expands and renames the Niagara Wine Trail system. The new configuration, which takes effect immediately, extends the trail across all of Orleans County and into Western Monroe County, encompassing more wineries than ever before.

The 10th season, two-hour premiere of "Grey's Anatomy" was Thursday's No. 1 drama in Adults 18-49 (3.4/9), outdelivering Fox's "Glee" (by 70 percent), CBS' "Elementary" (by 62 percent) and NBC's "Parenthood" (by 113 percent). "Grey's" opened ahead of its May finale in viewers and young adults.
