Higgins fights closure of VA Child Care Services

In response to notifications that the Buffalo VA Medical Center's Childcare Service Center will be closed on Sept. 30, 2013, Congressman Brian Higgins, NY-26, called on congressional leaders to include continued funding for the Department of Veterans Affairs child care pilot program in a continuing resolution for fiscal year 2014.
Yurts make their entrance to local state parks

CBS Corp., Time Warner Cable reach content carriage agreement

CBS Corp. and Time Warner Cable and Bright House Networks have reached an agreement for carriage of CBS owned stations on Time Warner Cable systems across the country, as well as Showtime Networks, CBS Sports Network and Smithsonian Channel, it was announced by representatives for the companies.

Programming on all networks will resume immediately.

Lewiston-Porter High School approved for Confucius Classroom

Lewiston-Porter High School has been approved for a Confucius Classroom, the only one in Niagara County. The classroom comes after five years of work through the University at Buffalo's Confucius Institute and the Chinese government agency HANBAN. It is also an extension of more than 20 years of international studies programming at Lew-Port.

With the Sept. 10 primary looming around the corner, the Niagara County Republican Committee issued a statement this week with regard to the race for supervisor in the Town of Lewiston.

Over past weeks, reports surfaced that both incumbent Steve Reiter and current Town Councilman Ernest Palmer secured sufficient numbers of voter signatures on petitions to enable their candidacy in the Sept. 10 primary on the GOP line.

However, the Niagara County Republican Committee has opted to remain in the background - until this week, announcing that it has decided to come out in support of Palmer in the primary.

Anthony L. Picone, M.D., Ph.D., MBA, cardiothoracic surgeon in the department of thoracic surgery, has been named medical director of Roswell Park Cancer Institute.

Picone has been employed at Roswell Park since April of 2009, and for the past six months has served as RPCI's interim medical director.
