New online volunteer resource unveiled in Niagara County

United Way of Greater Niagara and The Service Collaborative of WNY Inc. have unveiled www.volunteerwny.org in Niagara County. The website partners with local non-profit agencies that engage in volunteer generation and connects volunteers with opportunities in the Western New York region.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one out of five Americans report they have been diagnosed with arthritis, which means, "joint inflammation." And as the aging population rises, so will those startling statistics. The CDC also reports that people of all ages can be affected by arthritis, including children, and that nearly two-thirds of those affected are under age 65.

Dr. Brian Martin Murphy, the chair and associate professor in the communication studies department at Niagara University, has passed away unexpectedly of natural causes. Murphy had been a member of Niagara's faculty since 1999.

Assemblyman John Ceretto, R-C-I-Lewiston, today passed legislation to protect children from abuse by increasing penalties for those who repeatedly assault them. The legislation requires that a sentence of assault in the first degree be handed down to a defendant who has previously been convicted of either assault of a child or attempted assault of a child.

Throughout the '70s and '80s, Artpark was renowned as a major visual arts destination during the venue's popular "Artists in Residence" program. Hundreds of artists journeyed to Artpark's inspirational setting to create on-site installations throughout the park.

This summer, Artpark welcomes the works of more than 40 alumni artists from its long and distinguished visual arts history. The "40 for 40: Artpark Alumni Artists 40th Anniversary Celebration" will feature several alumni artists constructing 16 different on-site installations throughout Artpark.

Hard Rock Café Niagara Falls, USA, has announced a partnership with the Buffalo Music Hall of Fame to showcase memorabilia on behalf of Western New York's music legends. In conjunction with the partnership, on Thursday, June 27, the cafe will host a special event to announce the Buffalo Music Hall of Fame Class of 2013, followed by a ribbon-cutting ceremony to unveil the cafe's new Buffalo Music Hall of Fame room and live performances by Buffalo Music Hall of Fame members. Ceretto: To protect families and taxpayers, Assembly needs to pass welfare reform before session ends

Assemblyman John Ceretto, RC-I-Lewiston, is calling on the Assembly to pass the Public Assistance Integrity Act, which protects families in need by preventing electronic benefit transfer cards from being used for liquor and lap dances. He said the Assembly must act swiftly on this legislation, which has already been passed by the Senate, before session ends, because federal funding for the state's public assistance programs is on the line.

Higgins fights to keep college student loan rates low

Congressman Brian Higgins, NY-26, is urging leadership in the House of Representatives to act quickly to prevent college student loan rates from doubling. The current interest rate under the Federal Direct Student Loan Program is 3.4 percent. That number is expected to increase to 6.8 percent on July 1, unless preventative action is taken.
