Waste Management announced Wednesday that the company delivered $892,994 in gross receipt taxes to various local community partners. Last year, the total payment was $646,401. These payments are over and above property and school taxes paid by the hazardous waste treatment, storage and disposal facility. New York state requires a hazardous waste facility to charge 6 percent GRT on all hazardous waste landfilled.
Easter egg hunt at NACC

Higgins says VA decision to pull Golden Age Games creates hardship on WNY, veterans

Congressman Brian Higgins, NY-26, expressed shock and disappointment upon learning of plans by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs to "postpone" the 2013 National Veterans Golden Age Games in Buffalo. Higgins is urging the VA Secretary to reconsider and proceed with the event, titled "Warriors on the Waterfront," scheduled for May 30 through June 4.

Local organizers have been planning for the event since 2007. Buffalo was officially awarded the Games in 2011. Earlier this month, Higgins' office worked closely with local organizers to facilitate finalization of the contracts with the VA.

NU kicks off spring sports season with rugby

Niagara University's Rugby team, which made the playoffs in the fall of 2012, is getting ready to kick off another successful season. Last fall, the team went undefeated and made it to the first round of the playoffs where NU lost to Colgate. Strong leadership and hard work from the players brought the team to be ranked at 14th in the nation. Already the players are back out practicing, playing in tournaments, fundraising and serving the community.

Insyte Consulting, a non-profit management consulting organization, has announced it has helped its manufacturing clients reach $1 billion in economic impact in Western New York. The figure is the sum total of the benefits reported by Insyte Consulting clients since 2000 to independent third-party survey companies working for the U.S. Department of Commerce. Part of the $1 billion includes saving or creating more than 7,200 jobs.
