On Friday, Jan. 18, 29 leaders across the region will begin a yearlong graduate level leadership development program sponsored by Leadership Niagara. The inaugural meeting of the class will be a two-day retreat at the Four Points by Sheraton in Niagara Falls, held for students to learn leadership concepts and principles, the importance of community interrelationships, how to enhance their personal style through DiSC behavioral assessments, critical thinking, and other introductory exercises to prepare for their year together.

Assemblyman John Ceretto, R-I-Lewiston, expressed his opposition Thursday to the reintroduction of Assembly bill 2597, known as the Dream Act, by Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver. The measure would allow illegal aliens who "meet certain criteria" to receive higher education subsidies at taxpayer expense.

The Buffalo Sabres have announced that seven Sabres games during the 2012-13 regular season will be broadcast nationally on NBC and NBC Sports Network. Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo signed into law Tuesday the NY SAFE Act (Secure Ammunition and Firearms Enforcement Act), which will give New York state the toughest gun laws in the nation. The legislation includes provisions to keep guns out of the hands of convicted felons and potentially dangerous mental health patients, and ban high capacity magazines and assault weapons.

Under the legislation, New York will be the first state in the nation to ban any magazine that can hold more than seven rounds and run instant background checks on all ammunition purchases at the time of sale.

NCAP: A night filled with awards, recognition and promotions

On Saturday, Jan. 12, the Niagara County Auxiliary Police held its annual recognition and awards dinner in Lockport. In 2012, the 27 members of the NCAP volunteered their time (6,765 hours, of which 4,016 were duty hours) to serve the community.
