Ceretto announces new $3 million appliance-rebate program

Assemblyman John Ceretto is pleased to announce that the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority has unveiled a new $3 million rebate program for the purchase of high-efficiency Energy Star refrigerators and washing machines. Ceretto noted the program will begin next Friday, Sept. 2.
Niagara University offering free office furniture to community on Saturday

Niagara University has completed renovations to several of its campus offices this summer, freeing up a great deal of furniture. As part of its effort to remain environmentally friendly, the university is offering this gently used furniture to members of the community free of charge.
Ceretto legislation streamlines pistol permits

Assemblyman John Ceretto, R-I-Lewiston, is sponsoring legislation to help streamline Niagara County's pistol permit process. The bill would help alleviate the current logjam in the license process while supporting Second Amendment rights by allowing a certified staff member of the Niagara County Clerk's Office to access mental health records for pistol license applications. Sen. George Maziarz, R-C-Newfane, will also introduce this legislation in the state Senate.

Grand Island Fire Co.: Island firefighters contend with residential fire

At 8:36 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 24, Grand Island Fire Co. firefighters responded to a structure fire at 303 Park Place, which had been reported by a neighbor who noticed "heavy smoke coming from the eaves." This home has been under construction by Joel Kruppa, a Niagara Falls firefighter who was not on the premises when the fire erupted.

Here's another happy story I want to share with you. On a recent trip to NYC, I was shopping in midtown (I know, shocking), and looking for a taxi to return to my hotel in Tribeca. It was late afternoon, when all the drivers are changing shifts, and it's very difficult to find a taxi at this time of day. It's common for an available town car to stop and ask taxi-seekers if they want a ride for a slightly elevated price.
