Niagara University Theatre announces winning season showcasing variety and value

Niagara University Theatre's 2011-12 season offers an array of entertainment options to suit a variety of tastes. The entire season will be produced in the renovated William P. and Marie Leary Theatre in the new Elizabeth Ann Clune Center for Theatre, with the exception of the annual collaboration with the Castellani Art Museum.

After eight weeks of grueling competition, last night's episode of Oxygen's "The Glee Project" charged the remaining four contenders with their latest "Glee"-inspired challenge when Kevin McHale ("Glee's" Artie Abrams) showed the contenders how to put others first for "Generosity" week. Children from Education Through Music-Los Angeles (ETM-LA), a non-profit organization with the mission to provide music education to disadvantaged schools, joined the contenders in performing My Chemical Romance's "Sing."

TNT adds more 'Leverage' as hit caper is renewed

TNT has renewed its fast-paced, light-hearted caper drama "Leverage" for a fifth season, just as the fourth season is shaping up to score the show's biggest ratings yet. TNT has ordered 15 episodes of "Leverage," with the fifth season slated to launch in summer 2012. The series - which centers on a gang of grifters, hackers and thieves out to settle scores against the rich and powerful - currently airs Sunday at 9 p.m. (ET/PT). After the show's Aug. 28 summer finale, "Leverage" will return to wrap up its fourth season with new episodes in November and December.

With pleasant weather on the outside and few residents inside, the Porter Town Board session was short in duration Monday at Town Hall. In stark contrast to July's heated session on the boating law controversy that had the meeting room overflowing, this one lasted well under an hour. But it did include productive discussion and some work done also.
Foster the People loved by the people

It was a sold-out, standing-room-only crew that attended the Foster the People concert at the Tralf on Tuesday, Aug. 9. The LA band, crowned as "the wunderkinds of indie dance pop," has a huge high school/college crowd following, but it was a very diverse crowd on this night. To be sure, there was a wave of girlish screams heard as Mark Foster and company bounced onstage.

"Karaoke Battle USA's" panel of all-star judges and show producers will select finalists from the best video submissions from aspiring amateur karaoke stars. Then, viewers will pick a winning at-home king and queen online. Contestants should visit www.karaokebattleusa.com or the "Karaoke Battle USA" Facebook page and follow the directions to enter, starting at 9 a.m., ET on Aug. 12. A karaoke version of either "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" or "Unchained Melody" will be available upon registration, and eligible contestants can upload a video of their solo performance using Facebook or YouTube.
Lewiston events improved with Greenway funds

The Town of Lewiston has been awarded $340,000 in Greenway funding in order to enhance the Niagara Greenway corridor, by creating new town projects and improving upon existing ones. The Lewiston Council on the Arts received $15,000 toward this year's Lewiston Jazz Festival, and $325,000 will be used toward the War of 1812 bicentennial commemoration.

In recognition of National Dance Day on Saturday, July 30, instructors and students from the Lewiston and Grand Island Dance Centers took part in the third annual Buffalo Dance Festival at the University at Buffalo Center for the Arts. Featured were daylong intensive sessions of master dance classes from Western New York dance companies, led by Jon Lehrer, Joseph Cipolla, Bill Evans and Christina Johnson.

Students in Susan Akin's Time to Dance studio recently placed well at July's "Beyond the Stars" nationals in New Jersey. Out of 404 routines, Akin's elite-level dancers were asked to compete along with 31 other teams in the "Ultimate Challenge." From that bunch, Time to Dance performers finished fifth. In total, the school took home more than a dozen trophies (including one that's 4 feet tall).
