Lewiston-Porter Middle School dedicated a new student sculpture this past Wednesday, Sept. 14. The work is a culmination of a yearlong collaboration with the Ashford Hallow Foundation and funded through a Target: Arts in Education Grant called "Sculpting Character."

The League of Women Voters Buffalo/Niagara will kick off its 2011-12 events with a meeting featuring David Swarts, who will address "What Does it Mean to Be a Public Servant?" Swarts, a lifelong resident of Erie County and a former middle school social studies teacher, served as Erie County clerk and commissioner of the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles. He will offer his unique perspective on this question.

Lewiston teenager Michelle Ball recently had the opportunity to appear in Hollywood's biggest budget film of the year: "The Dark Knight Rises." The picture, staring Christian Bale and directed by Christopher Nolan, follows the success of "The Dark Knight," which was the third largest financial grossing movie of all time. With a returning cast and crew from the original movies (including "Batman Begins"), "The Dark Knight Rises" is sure to be the blockbuster hit of the 2012 summer season.

The 2011 "Every Step" Walk to benefit the Hunter's Hope Foundation will take place at Martin's Fantasy Island on the morning of Saturday, Sept. 17. Walk participants will raise money for Hunter's Hope by following a route that leads them through the Grand Island park's landscaped grounds, around the carousel and children's rides, up the Western Street, and down the midway.
