Assemblyman John Ceretto, R-I-Lewiston, is pleased to announce the passage of legislation to allow Nik Wallenda of the legendary Flying Wallendas family to traverse the Niagara Falls River Gorge on a high wire. Ceretto noted that the event would help promote tourism and increase local revenue for the economically distressed region.

Niagara County lawmakers voted Tuesday to schedule a public hearing on a proposed law barring protests at funerals, burials, and wakes within the county, setting the stage for the county to join a growing number of states, counties, and municipalities around the nation enacting law to curb brazen behavior by odd-ball picketers that have disrupted military funerals in recent years.

The crowd at "First Niagara presents Tuesday at the Park" will experience an evening with the one and only beginning at 6:30 p.m. (no opening act). Oh, and it's a free show.

So, as the story goes, L.A.-based recording artist and Grand Island native Stacy Clark was back in town on Tuesday, and wanted to check out Creedence Clearwater Revisited at her favorite venue, Artpark. Once there, she bumped into some friends, Mike and Mia, who suggested they all hang out post-concert at Lewiston's newest establishment, Hops-N-Vines.

What started with a motivational speech at the end of March ended Monday with a giant paper chain wrapped around the Lewiston-Porter Intermediate Education Center parking lot. Students assembled a 534-foot-long chain and shouted, "We are kind!"

Lewiston Board OKs Creek-Pletcher PUD

The Town of Lewiston appears to have cleared the way for development at the northeast corner of Creek and Pletcher roads. The Town Board voted 4-0 Friday morning to approve a Planned Unit Development calling for a modified proposal of 43 units of senior housing sponsored by People Inc., along with a revised conceptual plan for 17 two-unit duplexes to be built on 20 acres.

Heard was continuing frustration of boat and property owners over a nagging town law covering storage and locations of boats and recreational vehicles. Soluri, Parkway Preservation members urge vote in favor of parkway

More than two-dozen people attended Thursday's meeting of the Parkway Preservation Committee, which coincided with the display of six Robert Moses Parkway North alternative drawings at the Village of Lewiston's Red Brick Municipal Building. Former Lewiston Mayor and current 12th District Niagara County Legislator Richard Soluri served as moderator, and urged the audience to vote in favor of parkway plans maintaining or refurbishing the main road between downtown Niagara Falls and the River Region.

As part of Niagara Homecoming, the Niagara Arts and Cultural Center, formerly Niagara Falls High School, will be holding its first-ever all-class alumni reunion on Saturday, June 25, from noon to 6 p.m. LaSalle and Trott students are also welcome to attend. Both NFHS and LaSalle memorabilia dating from the 1920s to the 1990s will be on display, and former NFHS students who lost their lives in a war will be featured on a Memory Wall.

The Lew-Port Class of 2011 recently celebrated the end of the school year with the Lewiston Police Department, which presented its annual picnic for the graduating seniors at Fort Niagara State Park. The day featured a parade of uniquely decorated Class of 2011 student vehicles escorted into the park by the Lewiston Police, New York State Parks Police and Niagara County Sheriff's Office.

The Ransomville "Free Concerts in the Country" 2011 series kicks off on Thursday, June 30, with an award-winning local high school rock band, Brass Monkeez. The eight-week free concert series takes place at the William J. McLaughlin Free Library Gazebo at 3733 Ransomville Road every Thursday at 7 p.m. from June 30 through Aug. 25 with the July 14 concert changing venues for one date only to Porter on the Lake Park.
Cemetery workshop in Buffalo

Maintaining historic cemetery markers is a challenge for volunteers and professionals alike. Many repair methods commonly used, despite the best of intentions, actually cause additional damage to these precious headstones and other monuments. Preservation Buffalo Niagara is seeking the volunteers and staff who deal with caring for cemeteries, especially persons from smaller, often rural cemeteries, to attend a workshop on how to make appropriate repairs.
