Maziarz recovering after fall

State Sen. George Maziarz, R-Newfane, was released from Albany Medical Center on Tuesday afternoon. He was hospitalized Monday after a fall in his Albany apartment.

Slaughter announces fire company funding

Congresswoman Louise Slaughter, 28th District, Fairport, has announced two grants from the federal government totaling more than $340,000 that will benefit Western New York fire companies. The Rochester Fire Department is set to receive more than $252,000 and the Youngstown Volunteer Fire Co. will be awarded $91,756 for equipment and training activities.

Smoke damages room at Barton Hotel

About 2:30 p.m. today, smoke billowing through a first floor room at the Barton Hill Hotel & Spa in Lewiston triggered a quick response from local fire companies. Trucks rushed to the scene as firefighters rushed into the four-story building to assess the damage. As of the 8 p.m. check-in, there was no official word as to what caused smoke to engulf the room.

Village of Lewiston: Festival organizers may face fees

The Village of Lewiston Board of Trustees is still struggling with whether or not to charge festival organizers a fee to cover safety and maintenance costs. At Monday's work session, Mayor Terry Collesano revealed the community's seven summer festivals cost the municipality almost $4,200 in Department of Public Works labor, and upwards of $11,000 in police services.

Lewiston gymnast shines in Orlando

Level 9 and 10 gymnasts from Gleason's School of Gymnastics traveled to Orlando, Fla., last month to compete in the Presidential Classic. The meet was held Feb. 19 and 20 at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex and was hosted by Twisters Gymnastics from Boca Raton, Fla. More than 1,700 gymnasts of various levels competed from all over the country.
