Kaus honored by fellow board members

Niagara-Wheatfield Board of Education members took time to honor fellow board member Maureen Kaus at their meeting last week. Kaus recently announced that she would not be seeking re-election to her seat this year after serving 15 years. Board President Michele Hoerner presented flowers to Kaus.
Benefit aids Josh's Journey

The first Benefit for Josh's Journey: A Foundation of Hope will be held Saturday, May 15, at the Frontier Fire Hall, 2176 Liberty Drive, Wheatfield. The event will take place from 4 to 9 p.m. and feature live music performed by Glenda and Chaz; a DJ by U Found A Sound; and appearances by the Buffalo Jills Cheerleaders.

HAL unveils plans for War of 1812 bicentennial

In observance of the War of 1812, HAL plans to unveil an eight-foot tall bronze monument on Dec. 19, 2013, the 200th anniversary of the siege of Lewiston. The monument will be called "Tuscarora Heroes." Youngstown artist Susan Geissler designed the project, estimated to cost between $350,000 and $400,000.
Village of Lewiston: Collesano earns GOP, Democrat lines in mayoral race

With 54 percent of the vote, mayoral candidate Terry Collesano was endorsed Tuesday by the Village of Lewiston Republican Party. The 20-year trustee outpolled Bill Geiben, who was selected mayor in November 2009. "I'm just overwhelmed," Collesano said after the vote result was announced. "I just want to thank everyone. New Artpark exit a possibility

Recently, the Village of Lewiston, Artpark & Co., and New York's Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation have discussed the possibility of opening a new exit leading from the performing arts venue to the Robert Moses Parkway south (Niagara Falls). In this scenario, patrons exiting Artpark via Portage Road could turn right on Seneca Street (shown left) and onto the RMP. This new connection, only available during the "Tuesday in the Park" concert series, would be the only way for motorists to access the parkway. Center Street to the RMP would be closed.
County Health Department announces free flu shot, rabies vaccination clinics

The Niagara County Department of Health hold free flu shot and rabies vaccination clinics on Saturday, May 22, at the Cornell Cooperative Extension Merchant Building, 4487 Lake Ave., in the Town of Lockport. Time for both sessions, which are open to county residents, is from 2 to 4 p.m.

If you watch "American Idol," and you're like me, then by about the second episode you've had enough of the sob stories. Yes, we feel bad for those down-on-their-luck contestants. And sure, it's nice to learn about the participants and find someone or a few singers to root for throughout the season. But come on, this is the show that brought us Sanjaya, Bikini Girl and Gen. Larry "Pants on the Floor" Platt. We're not watching "AI" because of its cultural enrichment - we're watching it to be entertained.

Greenway Commission backs plans

A 31-foot Center Street addition and a 50-foot apartment complex on Ridge Street highlight the newest Frontier House sketch, as presented to the Village of Lewiston Planning Board on Monday. Architect Timothy E. Kupinski, RA, of the EI Team, presented the four-person panel with an updated draft of developer Richard Hastings' vision for the dormant historical building.

The Niagara River Greenway Plan, which began in 2002 as a bullet point in then-Gov. George Pataki's State of the State address, was signed and approved Thursday by state Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation Commissioner Carol Ash. The plan, in physical boundary and purpose, is a series of interconnected points stretching from Lake Ontario to Lake Erie. It was created to complement and herald the region's environmental, cultural and industrial heritage.
