Erie County District Attorney John J. Flynn announced 24-year-old Dequan Richardson of Cheektowaga pleaded guilty this morning before Erie County Court Judge Susan Eagan to one count of murder in the second degree (class "A" felony), one count of assault in the first degree (class "B" felony), two counts of assault in the second degree (class "D" felony), and one count of criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree (class "C" felony). The defendant pleaded guilty to the highest charge in the indictment.

With $280 million in funding for universal free school meals included in both the Senate and Assembly budget proposals, legislators, school administrators, parents and teachers from the Buffalo-area joined the Healthy School Meals for All NY Kids Coalition at Springville Elementary School on Friday to call on Gov. Kathy Hochul to address the crisis of childhood hunger in schools by fully funding a statewide, permanent "Healthy School Meals for All" program in the fiscal year 2024 state budget.

The Erie County Department of Health's division of environmental health is ending its waiver process for property transfers effective April 1. This waiver process required a $1,000 returnable bond for some property transfers when sewage disposal (septic system) and water supply (private well) inspections could not be completed before sale due to weather conditions or other circumstances.

Gov. Kathy Hochul announced a new initiative to help police and prosecutors in five jurisdictions solve non-fatal shootings and prevent retaliatory gun violence. Police departments in Buffalo, Rochester, Schenectady, Troy and Utica and their county district attorneys' offices will share $866,564 in state funding to implement evidence-based approaches to improve investigations and save lives.

On Thursday, members of the Niagara Falls Police Department narcotics intelligence division conducted a search warrant in the 4000 block of Hyde Park Boulevard. Narcotics detectives located a handgun reported stolen from out of state, plus 47 grams of fentanyl, 91 grams of cocaine, 24 suboxone strips, pills and a large amount of cash.

Ross announced today that Deandre Wilson, 51, of Buffalo, who was convicted by a federal jury of multiple charges for his role in a narcotics conspiracy, which resulted in a triple homicide, was sentenced to serve three consecutive life sentences plus 30 years by Chief U.S. District Judge Elizabeth A. Wolford.

U.S. Attorney Trini E. Ross announced today that Peter Hingston, 63, of Amherst, who was convicted of two counts of possession of child pornography, was sentenced to serve 168 months in prison and 15 years supervised release by Chief U.S. District Judge Elizabeth A. Wolford.
