Hochul announces reopening of major Western New York highways in wake of historic snowstorm

Gov. Kathy Hochul on Tuesday announced the full reopening of the New York State Thruway (I-90), I-290, I-190 (Niagara County section and Erie County section north of I-290), I-990, state routes 400 and 219, in the wake of one of the most consequential snowstorms in New York state history.

National Grid restores power to 93,600 WNY customers impacted by historic blizzard

National Grid has restored service to 93,600 of its 104,600 Western New York customers affected by the historic multiday blizzard that overwhelmed the region beginning Thursday evening. The company has more than 2,850 restoration experts on the ground - including line, service, tree, damage assessment and public safety workers - who are ready to repair the remaining damage as soon as roads are cleared and outages can be accessed.
Hochul submits request for federal emergency declaration

Gov. Kathy Hochul on Monday submitted a request to President Joe Biden for a federal emergency declaration, as a result of the historic winter storm that began Thursday, Dec. 22, and continues to impact Western New York and the North Country regions. The storm brought blizzard-like conditions, sustained wind gusts of more than 60 miles per hour, and well-below-freezing temperatures through the holiday weekend.

On Monday morning, Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz tweeted: "As of 7 AM, the Driving Ban will STILL be in effect for the cities of Buffalo and Lackawanna and the Towns of Amherst, Cheektowaga, Clarence, Evans, Hamburg, Orchard Park and West Seneca. It is lifted for all other towns as of 7 AM. The Thruway and NYS route are still closed."

More than 1,900 New Yorkers are set to receive benefits as part of the final round of payments from the state's historic Excluded Workers Fund (EWF). Nearly $30 million will be sent before the end of the year. In total, more than 130,000 EWF applications have been approved and, minus administrative costs, the entirety of the $2.1 billion fund will soon be distributed to eligible New Yorkers.
